Bent Over Barbell Rows

Dear Cathe,

I'm having trouble with the bent over barbell rows for the back exercises. I just can't seem to find a comfortable position that doesn't strain my lower back. It's not a strain so much as some mild discomfort--my lower back just plain gets tuckered out after a set or two.

I've checked out the form pointers on the Web site. As far as I know, I'm following them. :-hmmm What other suggestions do you have for improving my form?

Thanks!

:) Gretchen

Hi Gretchen! If you know that your form is fine then sometimes it just comes down to the fact that each individual is built a little differently and possesses their own natural body alignment. What feels good to one, may not feel good to another.

For example, I have a mild discomfort in my back when I do squats with my legs shoulder width apart. But if I go just a hair wider with my stance, then my back feels fine.

So the point I am tying to make is that perhaps you just need to alter the foot position slightly, or change your hand grip, or adjust how close or far apart your arms are to take the discomfort out of your back.

But if you feel that this discomfort could be related to a weak lower back, then perhaps doing some extra erector spinae exercises will help since this will strengthen your lower back and promote muscular endurance in this area, helping to keep you from getting "tuckered out" during your sets.

Good Luck :)!
