Cathe, I have been not feeling all that well for about three days and I've missed school because of it. Anyway, because I have been Sick I feel that my workouts have been harder. Can I still do aerobics if im sick? Sick meaning coughing, sore throat, and stuffed up nose. thanks.

Hi, Warchild2005! I think your name is Luis, isn't it?

I'm not Cathe, but I thought I'd attempt an answer.

If you're sick the way you've described, I think that working out is not a good idea. If you're coughing and your nose is stuffed up, that could impair your breathing, and you need to be breathing well in order to do aerobic work. Also, if you have a temperature, if you're doing aerobics that could drive your temperature up even more and that could become dangerous.

I suggest that you stop working out until you get better. Make sure you're not coughing, have a sore throat or any head congestion. Your body is probably working very hard to fight whatever it is that is making you sick, so just rest up, drink plenty of fluids, eat as much healthy foods as you can, and then you can come back to working out.

Hope this helps!

Annette,

I also suffer alot lately from allergy related illnesses...what do you think of just a like 30 minute walk. I honestly barely have the energy for that lately but feel like if I don't do something, I'm gonna rot!:7
Thanks!

I'm not Cathe but exercising while sick isn't a good idea, especial cardio go for weight before jumping up and down and breathing quicker then normal. The reason is when you breath quicker then normal, you can be inhaling your own germs, and reinfecting yourself, or you can be breathing in other germs and infecting yourself more. As well as the more your heart pumps the more that virus is spread threw your body and if that helps it get what it thrives upon you'll just make it multiply and then you'll get worse.

If you really intent on exercising go for scupting/toning. Less faster heart rate/breathing, and you still keep your strength which can easily disappear if your sick for a while.

Also if you want to get over this quicker go see your doctor there are some wonderful meds on the market now that can reduce the time you have a cold or the flu, and you can be back on your feet faster then trying to fight it all by your self. And sometimes it's well worth it then being miserable for weeks.

Hi, Kims! I don't know that much about allergy-related illnesses, but if you don't have the energy even for a 30 minute walk that could be a symptom of something more severe. I'll have fall back on that old mantra: check with your doctor about when aerobic exercise is contraindicated during a bout with your allergy(ies) and related illnesses.

I'm not sure what your overall program looks like, but one thing I learned over time that strength training boosts your energy level, for daily activities AND aerobic work, like you wouldn't believe. When I drop my norman lifting sessions even for one session, I feel sluggish, apathetic and tired; when I kick it back into gear I literally feel myself coming back to life.

I've been very peevish the past week or so because I weirded out my left foot, and that caused me to have to skip my normal Sunday cardio-strength monster workout, caused my to have to skip my normal Monday cardio-leg-circuit workout, and caused me to have to retool everything leg-oriented for the rest of the week. Today I was able to get a bit back into the swing of things, and I'll tell ya it felt great to get back to heavy weights.

Also - if you're not doing so already, consider bringing in aquatic training (swimming, water aerobics, aqua jogging) into your ongoing program. That can really keep you feeling limber and refreshed.
