I am looking for a good website for beginning runners. I need advice on how to start slowly (I don't want to dive in and get injured!) and on which shoes to purchase. Thanks to anyone who answers!
Runners World (www.runnersworld.com) has tons of info including forums and lots of info for women runners and/or beginners. Road Runner Sports (www.roadrunnersports.com) is where I buy all my gear.
I think shoes might just be the most important part of running for me. I started running almost 15 years ago and wore Nike exclusively. I didn't change until I got tendonitis in my knee about 6 years ago after a forced break from running due to unrelated surgery.
After I got over the tendonitis, I tried Asics Gel Kayano. I love these shoes. They say they are for heavy runners, but I just like the extra cushioning. They are expensive, but less expensive than physical therapy. You can find older models for cheaper than the current models if you look. I usually buy 3-4 pairs at once if i find them cheap as I replace my shoes every 2-3 months. Also, alternate shoes if you run two days in a row. (buy two pairs and alternate) This allow the cushinging in the shoes enough time to expand back to normal.
I also use Superfeet insoles. They seem to actually make a difference with support.
So try some Asics out--they have several different kinds at various prices and Road Runner Sports has a section of their website to help you choose what type of shoes you need.
Good luck!
Runner's World set up http://www.newrunner.com for beginning runners. There's lots of info there designed for people who may not be familiar with running terms. Easy to understand etc
As far as shoes go, yes Road Runner Sports has lots of info, but you really ought to try them on and walk/jog around the store before purchasing
