Rebecca Marisa Ferragut was born Feb 27th at 10:36 PM. It was an emergency C-section. I had gone in for an induction the next AM, and when they hooked me up to monitors, they found that she was in trouble. Her heart rate kept dropping dangerously low. This was unrelated to the induction attempt, since nothing had been done except the insertion of a time-release medication on my cervix, which hadn't yet released anything. We were just in the right place at the time that she became "distressed." It is obvious that if we hadn't been in the hospital being monitored, Becca would have died and we wouldn't have known until later. By the time the surgery prep was done her heart rate was in the 50s and not coming back up. She was fine as soon as she was delivered. They don't know for sure what the problem was because both the cord and placenta looked fine. They are speculating that she was on top of the cord or up against it in such away that when I had my Braxton Hicks contractions, it was getting compressed and she wasn't getting oxygen. She weighed 6lbs, 1 oz., considerably less than the 8 lbs estimated by ultrasound, and the reason we were inducing at all. I still get teary thinking about what would have happened if we had known how little she was and hadn't gone in that night. We are truly blessed!
It was a rough 1st week. She was re-hospitalized with severe jaundice a couple of days after we went home. Also, she had a physical problem that made nursing very difficult for her. Fortunately it was correctable, and we're on our way to a more normal nursing relationship. Everything seems to be on the way up.
