Barbell Weight

I ordered a barbell off the internet...afterwards, I found out it alone weighs 44lbs!!! Not a well thought out purchase, I know. x( But, I went back to the website and some other websites and couldn't find what I was looking for. What is the average weight of a barbell prior to adding weights? And does anyone know where I could get a lighter one so that I can build up the 44lbs. Tx!

I have the Troy Light system which you can find on the Fitness First (www.fitness1st) website, and the Cathe forums originally put me on to this system. I really love it; the bar itself only weighs 5 pounds, and is somewhat shorter than a lot of other bars so it's not a space-chewer; plus it's a slim bar with knurling towards each end and smooth in the middle. The Troy Light bar can accommodate up to 80 lbs of rubberized weight plates, which of course you can also get with this system. I don't know the average weight of other bars for barbell systems, alas.

Hope this helps -

Rachel,
It sounds like the bar your bought may be an Olympic bar, that takes weight plates with a 2" hole. The other barbells that are mentioned (I'd recommend the Troy lite system as well) take standard plates with a 1"hole. Just something to think about if you already have plates.

When the package arrives in the mail/UPS deny delivery. Send it right back without opening the box unless you want the heavy bar. That way you won't have to pay for shipping & they will have to credit your credit card.

Thank you so much. I didn't know I could just deny the shipment and it would be returned. You saved me a bunch of money and now I will be able to afford the correct equipment. :7

One more thing about denying shipment that I just thought of--contact your credit card company on the day the equipment is delivered & sent back. Let them know that you denied shipment as you decided you no longer wanted the equipment. Write down the date & time of the call to your credit card & keep it in a safe place until the credit appears on your card. Making this call starts the process of getting the appropriate credit.
