barbell vs dumbells

Cathe,

Is there an advantage strength wise to using a barbell over dumbells? I know sometimes the barbell pulls for better form, but I can't help but feel that its also a little more challenging than the same weight using barbells, for all exercises. But, sometimes changing plates is inconvenient!

The only time I may use dumbells over the barbell is for bicep work (Muscle Endurance for certain). Sometimes I feel it too much in my forearms and I don't like that feeling.

I also use dumbells for PLB so I don't have to spend the whole morning messing with plates.

This was a message I received from Cathe on the same topic. Hope it helps. Lesly

Hi Lesly,

I personally feel that if you use both you will have better cross training effects.

Dumbbells have the following advantages:
1) You increase your coordination and balance
2) Your stabilizer muscles come into play a bit more
3) You can more effectively balance your weaker side with your stronger side

Barbells offer the following advantages:

1) You can generally go heavier with barbells
2) You recruit muscle fibers in slightly different ways
3) Certain exercises feel more comfortable with a barbell (ie: bench press and squats)

Enjoy your workouts!

Hi, I read a post where someone asked about barbells?
I am fairly new here, but a few months back i decided to get a barbell set and did some research. here is a web site where I ourchased mine. It was at the time suggested to me becasue it was used mostly by females and in fitness studios and home use. I think it is the exact weight as the one Cathe uses. I hope this helps. Oh and just type in powercut barbell in the search.
