Barbell for Butts & Guts

Is a barbell for Cathe's Butts and Guts absolutely necessary? Or can I just get by with using dumb bells instead? I've been interested in this workout for awhile, but I'm concerned about the whole barbell thing. I don't have one.

Butts & Guts is by far my favorite LB workout. I have a barbell, I bought it cheap at garage sale but you could sub dumb bells it is I believe just squats and deadlifts where you would use it. This workout has a combination of standing and floor work and I always feel a great sense of accomplishment completing this one.

Butts and Guts is great! And it is totally doable with dumbbells. For a while I had a shoulder issue and couldn't lift the barbell over/ behind my head ( for squats). So, I just used 2 fifteen pound dumbbells. I like to place them on my trapezius muscles on either side of my head and hold them there with my hands. This is more comfy to me than holding them either low by my thighs or high in front of my chest. Anyway, for B and G, you probably need a set or light dumbbells (3, or 5#) for walking lunges, one legged squats, and low pulse lunges, and one set if heavies ( 15 or 20s?) for squats and dead lifts. A fair number of exercises are done with no weight, but they are still tough (lunge/ front kicks, lunge squat series, side thrusting lunges). Fire walker band or resistance band is must.

I use 20 pound dumbells on my shoulders for the squats. I only have dumbells and I have no problem getting a killer workout. FYI butts and guts was the only thing that Reduced the cellulite on my thighs significantly ( that and of course changing my eating). Good luck - buts and guts really gives results!!

Thank you all so much for the excellent feedback! I really appreciate it. I bought the X Train series (without Ride), and I'm now in week 10. I have all of the equipment used in that series. And I'm absolutely loving all of X Train, but I'm thinking of adding in some new videos after the 90 day rotation is done. I've always been interested in Butts and Guts, so now I'm going to get it. I have pairs of dumbbells that are: 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 25. I didn't want to have to purchase the barbell though. I'm relatively new to working out with Cathe, although I've known about her videos since the late 90's. I've always been intimidated by the level of difficulty in her workouts. My first Cathe purchase was Low Max and after that, there was no turning back!
Btw, I'm now in the best shape of my life at 34, due to X Train and clean eating. The number on the scale hasn't gone down since before starting the 90 day rotation, but my muscle definition is nothing short of spectacular. I'm so happy with the results. And even though the scale hasn't gone down, I've gone from a size 8, to a size 6. And I now have abs! I love Cathe! I look forward to working out with her every day.

fej327 - how often did you do B & G to get the cellulite reduction? Was it your only lower body workout? Just curious. I love B & G, too.

I did butts and guts every Sunday with increasing weights every week for 12 weeks. By the end I was using 12 lbs for the one leg lunges and 5 lbs for the whole floor portion. I also increased/changed my cardio to HIIT workouts 4 times a week and 2 days of"other" cardio ie treadmill eliptical etc. clean diet sun-thurs Friday I cheated. I put all my food in MFP app to make sure I stayed honest with my eating. I lost 2.5 inches in my thighs, noticeably tighter and huge decrease in cellulite. I had decided to go at it hard for 90 days/3 months and see if it would make a difference. I had done other workouts but none that I felt it like butts and guts. I've always exercised and never really changed my cellulite until this. I'm doing sts now but still work in the floor portion of butts and guts. That workout kicked my butt - and I love the results!!

I've never tried increasing the weights (never really wanted to) but, I agree it's an awesome workout. I'll start challenging myself more. I've been trying to do legs two or three times a week. Thanks for your posting your personal experience.
