Barbell bar length question

Hi all,

I'm still getting my gear together for STS and would like some advice about barbell bar length. I can choose between a 5 foot or 5 1/2 foot or 6 foot bar (and even longer).

Is 5 foot still long enough to load on a number of weights at either end?

I'm hoping the STS will arrive this week, The Netherlands is hard to find apparently!

Thanks & cheers
Rosemarie

Hi Rosemarie!

A guy here but I thought I'd give my 2c... :)

I would suggest you measure the distance between your hands when you do a shoulder-wide (or wider) bench press and go from there.
I found out that with the 5ft barbell (I had bought a couple of years back) by palms are marginally close to the plate weights and on the low end of the movement my forearms press against them so I "upgraded" to a 6ft barbell for STS.

Chris.

P.S. Greece is even harder to find, even for UPS!!! My STS is stuck in Koeln for the past 3 days... seems they have some sort of carnival celebration over there. Bet my DVDs will arrive covered in confetti, happy AND drunk!!!

If you have a power or squat rack, you should also take into consideration its width. My 5 foot barbell did not leave much room for plates. I subsequently bought a 6 foot one which works great for my power rack.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I need to go for the 6 footer.

Hang in there Chris! Our STS's will eventually find us.

It did.. it's waiting for me at customs...:(
Gotta go tomorrow as early as 7:30 am to handle the import paperwork and cough up 75 Euros ($95). Probably spend at least a couple of hours and be marginally on time for work...
It's either that, or pay another 65 Euros for UPS to do the importing...

STS in Greece!

Yiiiiiiiipeeeeeeee!!!
After 1.5 hours at customs (an all-time record!!!) and 82 Euros I finally got them in my hands!
Packaging was great, all DVD plastic leaves are intact, nothing broken and no scratced DVDs! Phew!
I also received the replacement 12-disc cases from the UK today. Seems clear plastic is less flexible than black or colored plastic... who knows...
Have to keep myself from rushing through the 1RM tests... March 2 seems so distant!!!
Chris.
