Bad Knees

Hi Cathe and everyone. This is the first time that I have posted. I have been exercising since October with Firm/Cathe tapes. Today I went to see my Doctor because my knees have been really bothering me. He basically told me that I had injured them due to most likely overtraining and that I would NEVER be able to do squats, lunges, etc ever again without the pain returning. He told me that Iwould have to modify everything and do only floor work for legs. Has anyone ever heard of this?? I am really depressed right now. I have approximately 50 new tapes and I'm pretty sure that their are squats, lunges etc on every single one of them. I cannot imagine how I am going to modify all of those moves to something else. He did tell me that I could do step when my knees feel better. Please help, does anyone think he is wrong? Thanks in advance to anyone with advice. Mary

I am a personal trainer. With that said I am definitely not a doctor and am very careful not to overstep my qualifications. The truth of the matter is that unfortunately many doctors are not experts in exercise prescription. If the problem is upsetting you to a large extent, I would recommend that you go to a sports medicine doctor and also get a referral to a physical therapist. These two professionals can give you very good advice about what the problem is exactly and how you can be rehabilitated. I think never doing squats again is extreme and unrealistic. We do the squat motion all day long as we stand and sit down. Go and get some second and better-informed opinions. Good luck!

Hi Cyndie and thanks for responding. The Doctor that I saw was my GP and I was actually seeing him for another problem and asked him about my sore knees. He looked at them and said that one was swollen and then made his extreme diagnosis. You have no idea how much that depressed me, I was practically in tears since I have basically just found these workouts and love them and bought so many and the thought that I was told NEVER EVER again to do them just totally depressed me. I wondered if he really knew what he was talking about. I even asked him if it was because of my age, weight, etc. By the way, I am 47 and about 20 pounds overweight, and he said no. He told me that his 16 year old son has the same problem and always will until he quits doing these same types of exercises. Thanks again for responding, it gives me a little bit of hope. Mary

Good morning everyone. Just bumping this up hoping for some more thoughts on this. Thanks Mary

I highly recommend going to an Orthoepedic/Sports Medicine doctor. I have had bad knees for years and my doctor sent me to a physical therapist where I learned strengthening exercises and stretches. It has really helped me.

I can't believe he said you couldn't do squats, lunges, ect..anymore. As Cyndie stated that is absurd because we do it in everyday life.

Good Luck!

I think Susan & Cyndie gave you great advice, not your GP. My ex-GP was not up to speed on sports injuries so I'm getting a new primary physician. Navigating an HMO is a challenge. I tore my ACL a few years ago & keeping the legs strong is exactly what the surgeon & PT's ordered. So I too urge you to see a sports medicine specialist. Rest & icing may be in order at first but don't sell those videos just yet.

Hi there. I want to thank all of you, Cyndie, Susan and Debra for all your help on this. You guys give me some hope and Debra, the tapes are not for sale yet (hopefully never). I did manage to get an appointment with an orthoepid that specializes in knee problems, but not until 5/2. I guess that really is not that far off, they did tell me I might get in earlier if there was a cancellation. The only problem is that I have not heard back from my primary care physician and he has to give me a referral. I have know this doctor for over 20 years and pray that he is not offended, but what the heck are you going to do. I am just not ready to give up yet. Well, I'm not going to stay on long tonight. I live in Albany, NY and we are having our first 70 degree day and I can't wait to get outside for a little bit. Thanks again to all of you. It is so great to have a forum like this where other people understand what you're going through. All the best to you guys. Mary
