I find the silicon beaded litter waaay less smelly and you just scoop the poop daily and then just sort of stir the beads.

Another thought:
Why not close the bathroom door?
YOu could make a cute sign to hang over the doorknob ("Occupied" or "Do Not Disturb" or another cuter way of saying it, on one side, and "Come On In" on the other) that humans can use to signal whether someone is using it or not (though you might want to verify for a while, until everybody gets used to changing the sign).

This doesn't have to be permanent: just long enough for kitty to find something else that interests him (and try out some new, tempting toys).
