bad cold

I have a bad cold and ache all over and I have been debating on getting in a workout, can I hurt myself if I did that? or should I just put it off till I feel better? I don't want to loose all the work I a have done.

Hmmmm, there is some debate on what is best to do during a cold. Here is my two cents.

I would avoid doing a very strenuous workout. Your body is under attack and does need most of its' available resources to help you recover. I think that pushing too hard with a workout could zap your energy so completely that your body could have a harder time fighting off the virus and your recovery could potentially be delayed.

I would suggest a mild to moderate workout, like a walk around your neighborhood. Something that gets you moving but won't rob you of your fighting resources. Or just do something for 15 minutes. That way you will feel like you did something and won't get down about taking a day off.

Of course, listen to your body! If you start something and your body is telling you NOOOOOO and it doesn't feel right, then take the time off to recover. Once you get over you're cold you'll be back in fighting form and probably anxious to challenge yourself with a good workout.

Hi!
They always say it's ok to workout as long as the cold hasn't entered your chest. For me, I think it all depends on how you feel. If you have a headcold and feel like you can still workout, then do so. If you don't feel like it, then take some time off. With a chest cold I would stay away from working out until it clears up. You could probably still lift weights though. The thing with me is when I have a chest cold I feel like I cannot get enough air to workout hard cardio-wise.
Anyway, my two cents..........

I disagree with the above posters. You say you ache all over? Then you need to rest, sleep, relax with a movie or good book. Drink, eat lightly and not work out. Give your body the break it deserves. You will lose nothing from not working out and you will gain something: a fighting chance for your body to get better more quickly. This, it seems to me, is common sense.

I have decided to listen to my body, I am going to take a break today and take some Tylenol for the aches and drink lots of fluids and snack on fat free foods like vegitables and lots of fruit with vitamin C and hopefully I will kick this and be back challenging my body to the fullest again.
Thank you for the great advice you have given me. is there something to help strengthen my immune system as not to get as many colds? I have heard about echenacia? I think that is how you spell it sorry about the bad spelling.

Just let this flu run its course. Don't do anything to stress out your system, it is too busy fighting this bug. Relax and REST, you have a whole lifetime to get back to fitness.

If you ache all over it sounds like the flu, in which case you would be doing more harm than good by working out. I find that I prolong my illnesses when I work out. :+ Stay in bed!!! I hope you feel better soon!!

Depends on how bad your cold is.I can only remember one cold when I didn't workout.I was to lazy. But all of the other colds I have worked out and they didn't last near as long.I have the cold now actually and I worked out yesterday and I plan on going for a run in a couple of hours.
Just go by the way you feel. You could always do a CTX workout so that you know it isn't that long.
