back surgery

I have been working out with Cathe for about 10 years with great sucess. I never post because there is always such great info already here. I now need some advice. I had back surgery 2 weeks ago(microdiscectomy). I have the OK to walk on the treadmill or swim or use the eliptical machine. My MD said I could go back to my regular exercise as I felt strong enough. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with back surgery and how their recovery was. Thanks and sorry so wordy.

I had back surgery 4 years ago - diskectomy, but open instead of micro. I expected unbelievable pain, but was up and walking the day of surgery, and feeling wonderful, just a little sore, probably because of the searing pain I had been experiencing before the surgery.

I started walking up and down the driveway the day after I got home, then progressed quickly to doing step tapes by 2 weeks after surgery. It was the easiest recovery from major surgery I've ever experienced (and I have plenty of post-op experience).

Bottom line - dread factor:none.

My husband just had back surgery two weeks ago. He is up and walking with a back brace but still having a lot of pain. He had a major complication while in the hospital. He became severely constipated because of all the morphine drugs and had to be re-hospitalized. They took an x-ray and he was all backed up into his chest. It was simply awful.

He still cannot take his own shower. He cannot bend over to do anything and is still taking a lot of pain medication. At least his bowels are moving normally now, with the help of lots of prune juice. But he was in unbelieveable pain and had a morphine pump while in the hospital. He suffered a great deal and still is.

We found a very good website that I think you will enjoy. It is called www.healthboards.com. There is a section on "back and back problems" that I think you will find helpful. You will be able to compare your progress to that of others who are going through the same thing. It has given my husband and I a lot of peace of mind.

I hope you do well with your surgery. My husband will be off from work for a total of eight weeks. He is on short term disability. It is my understanding that the recovery for some is very slow.

I had the same surgery 4 years ago... after 10 months of non-stop sciatic pain, with this surgery I was pain free the afternoon of the out-patient surgery and back walking etc after 2 weeks. I waited a while longer to start with weights again, because that is how I ruptured a disk ( deadlifts!! ) so I was a little cautious. Regarding the surgery though, it was the best thing I ever did and wished my MD would not have made me wait so long to do it.

Madonna, please don't let your husband's pain continue too long. There's a chance that his disc re-ruptured. This is pretty common.

Cindy, good luck with your recovery. The best thing you can do is take it slowly.

My neice had a complete hysterectomy about 6 weeks ago and her advice to herself was, "You only get one chance to heal," She was stir crazy and dying to get back to working out but followed her doctor's advice and she's doing incredibly well. So, I am right there with everyone who cautions you to take it easy and heal well. Then you'll be back to your workouts with the results you were looking for when you had the surgery! Good luck and heal well!
