It has been a while since my last post. I am glad to see that you are doing well. Not long to go before your baby is here. How wonderful. How is big brother Eric doing? Excited I bet.

Cathe, since Dec. I have been having lower back pains. Strength workouts are not my first love, cardio is, but I will try to get in one to two strength workouts a week. I ususally do Bodymax, MIS, PS or CTX. I do not have Power Hour or S&L. From this point on, I will be getting all of your workouts on DVD.;-) In Dec. I took a few weeks off from strength training. And I didn't do as much high impact. My husband gave me a spinning bike for Christmas, so since then I have been doing a lot of spinning. Yesterday when I went to the Dr. he had me bend over and touch my toes to the floor. He felt my back. He had me to this twice. Then he had me lay on the table and felt my back, spine. Apparently I had something that had rolled over and out of place. And I am sorry, but I can't remember the name. He then did a chiropractic move. He had me lay on my left side, I took his arm w/ my right hand. My legs were bent and relaxed. He then had me take two deep breaths and then pushed my right shoulder and pulled my lower back in opposite directions. He did this twice. He said it felt like they were straight and back in place. He thinks that this could have happened from doing squats. I have been doing squats since '98 and I have never had this problem. I did up my weights to 40 pounds w/ P.S. in Dec. The Dr. told me to take Motrin for any discomfort and if I still have discomfort in a week to call him and he will make an appointment for me to see the physical therapist. Last night my back felt better. I usually do have to find a certain position to sleep, but not last night. Cathe, when I do start my strength workouts again, what is the least amount of weight I can use for BM, MIS ,PS & CTX to see results or maintain what I have? Thanks and sorry so long.

Hi, Lollie, I am not Cathe but hope you won't mind if I pass along a couple of thoughts.

That you may have injured your back doing squats is somewhat vague but I respect my doctor and I am sure you respect yours; however, rather than worrying about lighter weights, have you considered having a personal trainer check your form? I have always found that some minor adjustments in form can make a huge difference in results.

Also, I have been emphasizing strengthening both my abs and my low back ever since I pulled something doing a plyo-jack in the 10th interval of Interval Max. Cathe's plank work on CTX and Slow and Heavy and her ab work on CTX are really helping me!

I wish you a quick recovery and hope you find the formula that works for you!

Hi Bobbi,

My son's friend's mother works at the gym on base and I will give her a call and see if she can make sure my form is correct. I have been doing squats since Cathe's MIS came out and I thought I was doing them correctly. My dr. said he thought it may be the squats because he has seen this before w/ weight lifters. But it wouldn't hurt taking a trip to the gym for her to check my form out.

Thanks for replying.

Hi Lollie! I agree to have your form looked at by a personal trainer. But personally, I would also take him up on the offer to see the physical therapist. A physical therapist will evaluate your allignment and offer corrective exercises that you can do at all times to help prevent this from re-occuring.

Another thing to consider is your form during spinning. Many people I know complain of back pain from doing high amounts of spinning. The forward flexion position tends to strain and invite tension in the lower back. Exercises that strengthen the core help to strengthen this area. Try to avoid sitting in an exaggerated forward lean while riding. I'm NOT saying that your back pain is due to spinning, rather just pointing it out as something to be aware of should this possibly be a contributing factor. Good Luck!

Hi Cathe,

Thanks for your reply. I am going to the gym some time this week and have my form checked out. The dr. said if I still have pain this week to call him and he will set up an appointment w/ the Physical Therapist. I go to a military base hospital here in Italy and you have to be referred. Right now my back is feeling much better. Thanks again!
