B&G or 4DS legs? Which is harder?

LauraMax

Cathlete
I'm skipping the gym tonight so am filling in w/one of these (since they're the only home leg workouts I have). Is 4DS tougher? If yes, what equipment do I need?

Oh, B&G all the way. Maybe it's the shorter length of 4DS legs that makes it seem easier to me. I just feel like B&G is killer.
I love 'em both, though!

ETA: They're very different w/o's though since B&G uses little to no weights and 4DS is all about using heavier weights (dumbells, barbell, high step and band). If I remember correctly, you weren't thrilled with B&G, right Laura? You'd probably like 4DS Legs better, but it will still probably pale in comparison to your gym leg w/o.

Thanks Allison. I knew I could count on you. :) As long as I don't lose any strength, right? The whole reason I own these workouts is so I have something in a pinch.

4DS might be the way to go for me. One of the things I hated about B&G was the length. My gym routine is only about 30 minutes. Also I prefer the heavier weights.

So what do we mean when we say "heavier weights?" I'm wondering if I have everything I need at home.........

I'm always there for ya, girlie. ;)

Actually, even though Cathe stresses that the 4DS workouts use "heavy weights" I was surprised that she doesn't go as heavy in the leg w/o. Leg presses with one 15# dumbell, squats with a 40# barbell, low plane lunges using 15# dumbells (well, those are hard, I guess ;)), outer thigh squats with ankle weights and 12# dumbell, front squats with a 40# barbell, deadlifts (I can't remember what weight she uses), um....I can't remember what else. I just wasn't blown away by the "heavy weights" used.

I don't know. It's probably just me.

Huh, I have all that stuff! Alrighty then, I'll give it a shot tonight & let you know what I think.

Tomorrow I'll try the 4DS chest. I have to be back at work at 7:30 but I think I can handle it. Except I don't think I have all the necessary weights. I definitely don't have 35 lb dumbells. I'll try subbing w/a barbell.

Wish me luck! :)

UGH! Now I don't know what to do! <sigh> I guess I'm going home to do 1000+ leg presses, squats, & leg lifts. :(

Why don't you try 4DS tonight since you've already done B&G and then tomorrow you can give us your review of it--and tell us which one you think is harder? I'd love to hear your opinion on this, actually. I tend to prefer lighter-weight/non-weight leg work vs. heavy and you're the opposite (from what I remember)...

If it's not enough for you tonight, you could always tack on some of your own leg work or a segment from B&G. (I just recently acquired GS Legs and it is probably Cathe's best leg workout, imo. You might like this one for days like this when you're skipping the gym. --just a suggestion. :)

I expected heavier weights, so I'm disappointed in the 4DS leg workout. I warm-up with heavier weights than what is used in the dvd. It's stikll fine for those times when I'm in a pinch or need a touch-up with the legs for the week.

Oh, good. I'm not the only one!! Don't get me wrong, though--I still love it. I just go heavier than Cathe and do the "warm up" squats with heavier weight. Like Cathe says--the weight she uses is only a gauge for us--we can go heavier or lighter. (I'm just used to going lighter!!!:))

I don't have 4DS so maybe I shouldn't pipe in here, but BOY!, B&G nearly killed me this morning! I only got through 1/2 an hour, most of the standing leg work, and I'm already getting sore.

Butts and Guts is harder without a doubt. Try the leg blast premix if you really want to cry.

I have never had lower body DOMS like I have after this workout.

I think for 4DS legs to feel as effective I'm going to have to do it 2X through rather than once. I substituted fire walkers for the sitting outer thigh move that I don't feel and I use a 55 lb barbell for the squats and deadlifts.

Anyway, let us know what you think.

Maggie:)

Hi Allison,

OT, but don't you just LOVE GS Legs! I thought my calves and hamstrings would never recover--DOMS for days! Then there's all that great leg work with the band. It's one of my desert island choices.

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

Brilliant!! I don't feel those sitting outer thigh moves at all and fire walkers are the greatest idea as a sub!! Thanks!

IMO GS legs is the hardest one of Cathe's workouts. I did it the other day and still can barely sit down. I love Butts and Gutts, but I do not think it is the hardest leg workout and Legs and Glutes I find to be doable, but GS KILLED me!!!

I have not tried the 4DS legs yet. I will give that a try this weekend:)

You really can only go so heavy without access to a squat rack. Lifting alot of weight off the floor and onto your shoulders is pretty tough for most, plus its unsafe. I think that is probably why you can really only go so "heavy" with legs when working out at home-which is why there is the Leg Blast on Butts and Gutts!}(

That is one serious biz workout, I did it last night and almost passed out when those lunge/squat combos came on for the umpteenth time!! Ouch. I used some pretty unsavory language last night:7

Hmmm....I'm definitely going to have to try the leg blast premix! I've never done it before. I too thought that the leg work in the 4DS wasn't that hard. I liked it, but it wasn't that hard.

Does anyone else feel that with this series, nothing is quite long enough to really FEEL it? (Maybe I'm just used to being total jello after an hour of Cathe's cardio or weights).

So interesting to hear what each person thinks is the hardest leg workout. I've done all of them several times, including GS legs. While I agree it's a very good overall leg workout, I'm never sore and it's not because I'm not doing the weights or going to light, usually I'm going heavier. PLB, which I did yesterday, is the one that I totally feel the next day. Granted I do heavier weight on several of the exercises but man do I feel it in the booty and hamstring area. I guess it's the fact that you're doing 5 sets of everything when it's all said and done. Whatever it is, I like it and will make a point to do it when I need a real shock to my leg routines. I wish she would do more calve work though but I realize there is only so much you can do at home which is why I keep a gym membership to hit them good once a week.
