Atkins diet

So, I want to try the Atkins diet. I am not a big carb eater anyway. Is there one book that is better than the others? Do any of you have menu plans you follow regularly?

I've been doing Atkins for years. The original, Atkins for Life, is really good. It explains to you the chemistry & why the diet works so well. Also almost the entire second half of the book is recipes, which helps.

A typical day for me is a couple hardboiled eggs in the morning, a giant salad for lunch w/some kind of protein (usually leftovers from the night before), & some kind of broiled/roasted meat & steamed veggies for dinner. Tuna & chicken play a huge role in my life LOL. Snacks can be peanut butter, or some kind of low carb veggie (celery, carrots, etc) w/a cream cheese, salad dressing, guacamole etc. dip. Watch the salad dressings though--a lot of them have sugar.

Don't listen to the nay sayers who say it's not healthy. It's not healthy if you're eating 3 servings of bacon a day. But if you stick w/salads, veggies & white meat/fish it's very healthy & very effective. When I first went on the diet I lost almost 15 lbs the first month.

Oh & there's a very delicious thin sliced turkey bacon made by Butterball that you can eat 3 times a day. Cooks nice & crispy & tastes almost like the real thing. ;)

Cool, thanks!!! That's the book I bought for $5 on Amazon today. I got interested in it from your posts years ago about Oxypowder you mentioned Atkins. I realized that I'm not a big protein eater. I eat pretty clean and I'm already not a huge carb person either. I don't want to sift through novels full of extraneous info just to get to the basics of the diet. What about fat? Protein/veggie/fat each meal? I eat a lot of turkey, chicken and sometimes tune.

I don't really pay attention to fat. Really the only fat I'm getting is in the meat & PB, & it's generally the "healthy" kind of fat. You're good w/the proteins you mentioned. The only thing I used to count is carbs, but by now I know what foods to eat to keep it around 50-75 carbs a day (I'm in maintenance mode now--if I gain a few lbs I go back to less than 20 a day). My diet is probably about 75-80% protein.

Oh & I should warn you--you will experience energy loss during the induction period, but it seems to level off after that first two weeks. I guess your body just gets used to it. So you might feel tired at first, but after a couple weeks you'll get your energy back. :)

Yeah, don't worry about the fat. Only trans-fats are really a problem. That old 'saturate fat is the devil' is as Jillian puts it, 'a dinosaur'.

My favorite fats are coconut oil and olive oil anyway. I love a homemade viniagrette with olive oil and balsamic.
