Athletic Style Cardio

I have used your weight workouts for years, but ran 6 miles a day for my cardio. I am 46 and I can't run anymore. My body now forces me to do Low Impact Cardio. I tried your LOW MAX and it drove me crazy. To much dancy stuff and turns and moving around the board. Can you please come out with some DVD's for us folks who need to keep it simple but want your intensity.

Thank you

Hi Patricia - I'm not Cathe, but I can share which DVD worked for me when I was beginning to get the foot work down. Low Impact Step is a great beginner DVD with what I consider to be athletic moves and blasts to get the cardio intensity up. I still reach for it because it gives me a great cardio workout. The premixes on this dvd are also great cardio and leg workouts. They may have a video clip on this website that you can preview before you buy.

Hi Carmen,
That is funny that you mentioned this video. I already have it as well as her Low Imact Circuit DVD. What I was looking for is something basic like that, but longer and a little more intense.
I know I am being picky, but it never hurts to ask. Thank you so much for your advice

Patricia

Patricia - Have you tried IMAX 2? It is on the same DVD as Cardio and Weights. Imax two is intense but I find the foot work easy to follow. Only one interval has a mambo cha-cha but its lots of fun. Kick punch and crunch is another great cardio DVD.

Carmen-No I have not tried IMAX2. I will take your advice and review both of them. Thank you

Patricia:

There is plenty of athletic cardio in Cathe's fitness DVD library, i.e. all the workouts that pre-date Rhythmic Step. So, you can get both her Cardio Hits and Cardio Classics. Try also Drill Max, Imax and Imax 2. plenty to get started with!

Hey Patricia. I am not a fan of step routines so here are my picks. I would recommend all of the kick boxing vidoes (Kick Punch Crunch my fav). Also Boot Camp - I like to do the cardio only option twice for a 30 minute heart stopper. Also Drill Max cardio only option (or do the whole thing through and faint), Hardcore Extreme DVD many options. Finally, new 4 Day Split dvd all cardio.

I hear you on the running. I have scaled way way way back on my former "first aerobic love!" Boo hoo!!! Good luck.

I agree with pressju's suggestions. I have one of the IMAX workouts but I never do it. It is step and it's rather high impact, just so you know. Unfortunately, my knees would never be able to handle it, and I just don't like that high-impact stuff.

I urge you to continue playing with LOW MAX because it's a fantastic workout. Drop the risers (use just the step at first) and try little sections at a time - in addition to your regular cardio workouts - until you get them. I am THE most uncoordinated person and I finally got it so I know it can be done. I remember there were sections I just couldn't grasp until I put it in one day while just sitting on the sofa, with no pressure, and I was like "Wait a minute. No wonder I can't get this. I'm starting off on the wrong foot and I'm on the wrong side of the step!" And there was another section where I was going all the way around the bench, unable to keep up and not understanding why. Then I stood still, watched, and realized THEY'RE not going all the way around but are moving in a horseshoe pattern. Duh. I'd have my back to the tv and just get lost. Just remember, nobody's watching or judging while you trip on the step or hit the rewind button for the hundreth time. You're in the privacy of your own home and all those of us who aren't born athletes or dancers go through this. Learning new stuff is a pain but there will come a time when you'll say to yourself "I can't believe I ever had trouble with THIS."

So hang tough. You are sooooo not alone.

Hi Patricia,

I can echo what the other posters are saying. Cathe already has many athletic style cardio workouts so you have lots of other choices. That said, Low max was my intro to Cathe's step so I can relate to your frustration; it took a lot of rewinding to get through the warm up!! Anyway, once I got through the warm up, I did the Blast Only premix and it rocks! No fancy footwork, no impact, just heart pounding cardio. As for the step parts, I just took them one section at a time. Then I'd do whatever sections I'd mastered, plus the blasts. Over a couple of weeks, I learned the whole workout.

Keep working at the step sections, eventually things do click. It really is a fun way to workout and can be very kind to your knees, if you avoid the impact stuff. Once you "break the code" on Cathe's style, it's much easier to learn new workouts. HTH!

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

Hi,
I'm a former long distance runner who cannot continue at the rate I was running, but like to get the sun and outdoor time that it provided me.
May I suggest a bicycle? I am now completely addicted and ride it everywhere....running errands. I'm even investing in a trailer so I can carry my groceries, etc..
It does not cripple me the way running does, and my butt has never been tighter.

Cathe's IMAX videos are intense and I love those too. Also the compilations (terminator etc.) are equally challenging. As one ages, the brain needs to be exercised as well. Learning new cardio routines, although frustrating at first is one good way to keep that challenged as well, so don't shy away from the steps. It is a fun way to exercise the grey cells.

Carmen-No I have not tried IMAX2. I will take your advice and review both of them. Thank you

Hi Patricia! Just wanted to point out that IMAX 2 is high impact. I know you were requesting low impact. You already own the ones I was going to suggest. I wish I could help you further. So Sorry!

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I have just ordered Drill Max. I am sure that you have all cardio premix. I reviewed it online and it looked very athletic and not at all dancy. I can also just from high impact to low impact if some of the jumps hurt my knees.
I have faith-You will come out with more athletic type step workouts. Did I tell you that I love the Low Impact Circuit Cario Premix? I call you Cathe kick my @##.
Thank you again
Patricia

Hi, not Cathe, but have you tried any of the kick boxing workouts? They might be good for you. I don;t think there is too much impact in those.

drill max would be the perfect choice! i do that one more than anything else since my ankle surgery in may 2007. i can do step but it feels aulkward doing it so i choose floor aerobics, yoga, or kickboxing instead. have fun!
