At Home Computer Job?

Hi Kelley,
I was wondering about the use of the internet for transscribing. It certainly would save more time.

I guess in any career change there is apprehension, worry and wonderment. The 'should I plunge in and try to get on the job training? or take the training from a school?'

I looked at the Career Steps website. I see where they give you some reference books and a dictionary. They offer different packages. A basic, Gold, Platinum with a Graduation package. This later one includes a Referral Directory.
There training is much cheaper than vocational school or college and can be completed in about 6 months or so.

It is so hard to make the decision. Can I come to your house and watch how you work? LOL:p

I checked your profile Wanda and see that you live in Indiana. I live in Texas, so I'll see ya in about a week. lol

I'm sure it is hard making a career move. I've been doing transcription for 18 years and I'll probably do it until my fingers can no longer type. I actually have the perfect job. I work on a prn status, but the company always needs me. My supervisor and I have an understanding about how I work. Therefore, I work any hours and as many or few hours as I want. I never have to ask for time off. I just call her up and say I'll be out of town. I do not, however, have benefits since I choose to work prn, but my husband has excellent benefits through his job. I decided that no benefits and all my freedom outweigh having benefits and having to ask for time off, etc. I do, however, work enough hours to qualify for retirement, so I'm totally happy.

Hi Kelley,
Actually I was thinking of flying out to see you, so I'll be over tomorrow by supper time, okay? LOL:7 :7
Wow! That is great that you have enough hours to retire.

In doing a search on the internet for transcribers, I saw an ad that is running in India. A company is recruiting for transcribers. The only qualifications is to be able to speak fluent English and to know American slang.
I mentioned this to a friend who just happened to read a newspaper article about an Indian transcriber. Seems the lady got mad at the transcribing company she was working for and is threatening to expose all the patients files on the internet.

I'm wondering if somehow there is better security in this country, to keep that from happening here?
I also read in the news yesterday, that American banks are sending our credit profiles to European banks, finance companies, etc.
I was thinking that is really smart! Now those who destroy tall buildings can have access to our finances, and through questionable transcribing agencies,or questionable transcibists, our legal and medical data as well.

Maybe I scare too easy!:(

Many years ago I saw lots of job openings in Saudi Arabia. You had to sign like a 5 year contract. I would not even think of going somewhere like that now, but back then I definitely thought about. If I had been single with no kids, I might have jumped at it. It was tax free and they provided you living quarters, food, etc. I'm sure the working conditions were really bad, though, not to mention the way women are treated there. But the job paid over $50,000 per year tax free. If a person could stand it for 5 years, they could have made a lot of money.

As far as putting things on the internet. Very easy to do. I have access to all patient records in the hospital system that I work for which includes a very large hospital and at least 10 different clinics. We're all on the same system. Very easy to do. But I almost wonder if you could get arrested for that because of confidentiality. I know you'll get fired, but I'm not sure about the legal aspects. We all had to sign confidentiality papers for this job. I think anything is possible. I know that the system I work for is having trouble viruses. My work computer already had one and it had to be taken out. It was called a worm. The weird part is this computer that I'm on right is hooked to a router with my work computer and another computer. The work computer is the only one with the worm. The other 2 computers were not infected. People can do strange these.

Talk about serendipity. I'm loving this thread. If anyone's gotten formal training, would you mind telling what school you went to. Or if knows anyone who got formal training, can you make any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm getting antsy about enrolling for training. I'm wondering about which school as well. I have looked at MTDAILY.COM at the different schools. One wonders how much of an advantage it would be to go to one of the 'Harvard-Yale' type school over a little, lesser known communtiy college type school.
I'm leaning toward M.I.M.E. (Virtual Learning)as I was impressed with their comparisons of schools.
I'm too chicken to just go out and apply for the jobs or even take the certification test without having a background knowledge behind me. The course is more difficult at MIME as they prepare you for work. At least that is what their advertisement of Advanced and Expert Certification says.
I really need to get hopping on this. In my area, the hospitals are running help wanted ads for transcribers. I plan to enroll somewhere this week. Where? Don't know yet.
That is where you guys come in. Where? Where? Where? LOL

MIME compared their cheapest course with CareerStep's most expensive. They have 18 hours of doctor dictation compared with 7 CareerStep's, with at total of 1800 minutes. 30 hours of transcribing with CareerStep's 22 hours. A real instructor grades your work with MIME.
For their expert certification you get 2880 dictation time and over 350 reports.
Both of these schools and the others listed at MTDAILY sound good. Again, which one is more considered Yale, Harvard, Oxford...yuppy?
If I'm going for it, I want all the advantages of getting the job.:p

I started with The Andrew School (they have a great website)but I never finished because I got pregnant and was very sick...yadda, yadda, yadda. Anyway, they are great. They will help you get a job when you are finished and they seem to have a great reputation. It is pricey so if that is a concern you might not want to consider them. Just a thought! I highly recommend them!

Well I'm going to take the plunge.}( By Friday I will be enrolled in SOME school. I've narrowed my search down between two schools that are within my financial reach. I found one that will help place you with a job after graduation plus a letter of recommendation. That one really caught my attention. The other one, has more books, flash cards and the like. They write a letter of recommendation after you get through you course, but they don't help you get a job.

I probably won't have as much time to visit on line when I get busy with homework. But I will just have to find time to stop in and say 'Hi' once in awhile.
Life is sure going to change for me. They say you need to study for 2-3 hours a day. That also gets you prepared for the work that will follow. I also have to schedule in my exercise time,....well you girls know. That is what you do all the time, right?;-)

Thanks so much for the wealth of information you shared with me.

Could I ask one more question? If you have a choice between taking training with a transcriber machine or a wave player, which would you choose?
The wave player is supposed to train you to transcribe voice files via the internet. But, is the transcriber more widely used? ?????
:) :) :)

Wanda,
I'm a RN who was looking for a new line of work about two years ago. I did purchase a course online but havent' used it. Mainly because I stumbled into another job that is partly work at home(unrelated).
The course I purchased was CIA transcription. If this is one you had in mind please email me personally as i can answer any questions and have alot of extra practice tapes here you are welcome to have.
my email is
[email protected]

take care and good luck,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,
I just emailed you concerning your gracious offer. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Your advice will be most appreciated.

Wanda, Be sure and let us know how things go with your schooling. As far as your question goes. I do think a lot of companies are now using the Wave pedal (whatever it is called). My company will be using that in the future. I have never used one, but I do think this is wave of the future. ;-)

Well today is the day I enroll. I'm just waiting for a email from one of my girlfriends. She is to give me an answer about enrolling with me. Her husband is wanting her to take schooling on using the voice recognition technology.
I don't think the transcribing world is just quite ready for that, do you?
I mean, for what I have read, the device doesn't pick up all the different accents and isn't accurate enough. ?

I hope my friend comes with me. It would be an added benefit to learn this difficult field with someone close by.

Woo-Hoo Wanda! That is awesome. Keep us posted. How exciting you are persuing something new in your life. I hope your friend pulls thru for you. Happy Transcribing!

I'm also going to be enrolling for medical transcription. I'm just saving up for it. I'm looking strongly at M-Tec (www.mtecinc.com). There's also a great list over at yahoo for any medeical transcriptionist student. They really help each other out a lot (I've been lurking).

Congratulations. I can't wait to enroll too :)

Alli

Well, I'm officially enrolled since they charged my VISA card. LOL I get my books this week and my WAV player is on its way. My girlfriend joined with me. Now it isn't as scary. :9
She has talked to several girls on another forum. One said it was easy and English was her second language. Others made it sound next to impossible.
I think that in life, there are things some people are naturally good at. Others have to strive harder to get that good. So the same with transcribing. Some find it easy, others have to hit the books harder.

From what I have gathered from listening to you and what my girlfriend has found out; to be a good transcriber, one must be a very very good listener and a fast typist. Getting a knowledge of the medical terms and procedures is also needed.

Are any of you finding the Voice Recognition device catching on in your area? One girl at the other website said, the hospital she works for went totally Voice recogition and even her foot doctor uses it.
She said it will eliminate the use of transcribers except for the editing.
The Director of the school I'm going to, said the tapes are becoming passe' and most businesses are using the WAV player.
The Voice recognition may put me out of business before I get started. :D :D :D

So Wanda, do tell please! What school did you decide on? I'm very interested in this thread because I've been considering the medical transcription field for a very long time now. Thanks! Malissa :7

Hi Malissa,
My friend Brenda and I pored over many different schools before making our final decision. ALL of the schools are good. Some just fit into our budget better and the one we chose had an offer we found more to our liking....help with job placement. Yet this offer is only good if we score high on the final exam.
The more costly schools offered more books, but we felt those books could be added to our library as needed. We both are most interested in working right away. LOL
In regards to choosing the right school, We are beginners, what do we know, right? hahaha
We chose CAI even though we passed the entrance exam at a couple of the other schools. The Director was very nice to us as well.
Again, it was hard choosing schools. We checked out every one that is listed at MTDAILY.com They all had advantages and disadvantages for us.
DH says when I get through this schooling and I feel like I need more, then get training at another school. But I think the main thing is what I said in an earlier post and that is to be a good listener and to type fast.

For sure I will keep everyone updated as I am also sure I will be crying on your shoulders....saying 'help!' }( :)

Thanks, Wanda! Sounds like you really considered all your options. I really do hope this goes very well for you! Definitely keep us all posted! :)

Good luck Wanda. I'm sure you'll do great. I don't think the voice recognition will be here before you get finished. At least not in my area. We don't even use the wave pedal yet. We don't use tapes either. We use Dictaphone C-Phones. Everything is digital. Believe it or not, we just stopped using tapes within the last 3-5 years. We're way behind the times. I hated using tapes. They were a pain.

Thanks for the reassurance about Voice Recognition. I would think the device would have trouble with recognizing all the different accents etc. I hear you have to program words into it that aren't there. ?

Well.....my books, my CD's, my big pile of folders all came. Now I am up to my ears learning about electroencephalograms and ophthalmoscopes. (just thought I'd get some extra practice typing those words....hahaha) WOW! Over a hundred terms to learn how to spell, learn what they mean and practice typing them for speed...and I'm just on page 6!!!.....LOL 950 more pages to go and I haven't even looked at the CD's yet. This is going to be interesting! If I get through this course, not only will it be a miracle, but boy oh boy will I go out and celebrate.

I decided to do my studying late nights when the house is quiet. That gives me the chance to do my Cathe in the mornings and afternoons. I can fit in my bookkeeping and payroll job during the day as well. Housework? Haven't figured that out yet. :p
