Are we heading for soylent green?

After I went grocery shopping with my DDs, loading up on lots of fruits and veggies, my oldest says to me, "You know, Mom, it seems like it's cheaper to eat bad food than good food!" She's right! All those fruits and veggies are expensive! And good, non-processed food seems to cost more than all the super-processed stuff lining the shelves in ever-increasing numbers.

Are we as a society heading for a soylent green (remember that old movie?) type of food, where the majority of people can only afford the processed **it, and the wealthy get to eat the good stuff? It seems like we are. x(

I have never heard of this "Soylent Green" - if you care to tell me, I am interested.

However, I am always making comments to people about how the healthy food (i.e. produce) is the most expensive. I look down my grocery bill and my small bag of nectarines cost 8 dollars and my 2 red bell peppers are 6 dollars. It is true, but it is worth it in my opinion.

The anti-cancer diet is in the produce section. The cancer diet is on most of the packaged food isles. So many doctors and nutritionists now agree that disease is 70-80% environment (diet, smoking/drinking, exercise) and only 20-30% gentic.

There is a guy in Utah called the Grocery Guru and he helps families get there food for rock bottom prices. But on one of the TV shows he appears on, I have watched what he buys for people and it is all processed macaroni and cheese mixes and hamburger helper type stuff. Yes, that is indeed cost effective for families, but not healthy.

I don't remember it clearly (I may have to rent it one of these days), but I remember "Soylent green is made of people" too. lol :p

I've been eating a lot of processed food this past month, unfortunately, because we moved and life is just now settling back to normal. It's expensive, unhealthy, and to me at least, bad tasting.

What bugs me the most is how sugared-up everything. You go to buy whole grain bread and it's loaded with sugar. Spaghetti sauce--sugar. Yogurt--yuck. Salad dressing--sweet like candy. Cereal, forget about it. It makes me nuts, because I only like sugar in my desserts, not in my food.

Charleton Heston: 'Soylent Green is PEOPLE! It's PEOPLE!"

Yes, unfortunately, 'bad' food is often cheaper than "good' food (but not if you compare the cost of a pound of potato chips and a pound of potatos). SOme of it has to do with subsidies for 'bad' foods.

Sugar is cheap, and corn syrup is even cheaper, so you'll find it in a lot of foods.

But if you look at the 'real' cost (ie: health-related costs), 'good' food is probably cheaper than 'bad.'

If you think of your body as a Ferrari or a Mercedes Benz, it seems not such a bad idea to fuel it with the more expensive stuff.
