Are there any?

I need a GOOD sub for deadlifts. They are my favorite lower body exercise but I herniated a lumbar disc last year and have the feeling it's going to happen again sometime soon. I think it's time to say goodbye to the deadlift. I'm just so afraid nothing else will bring out the hamstring.

Hi Kim, I can't seem to find the link where Cathe has a sub for deadlifts. Maybe someone else could find it at Cathe's TV. I will try my best to explain it. You lay flat on the floor with your feet on the stability ball and lift your butt up in the air and roll the ball in and then out contracting your back. I hope this helps:). Edited to add Oh I found the link to Cathe's modification to deadlift http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpoLV8hdHG4&feature=channel_page

Thanks so much. I really hate to give them up but I'd rather still be able to work out than be laid up from another disc problem :D

A lot of supine on the ball, heels up on ball, bridging work done with variations works the hams better than the deadlift in my opinion. Take a look on youtube to search for these. Also, take a look at the "floorwork" Cathe does with ball and band or step and band in GS legs, second section, these also work the hams and glutes really well.

One of the best overall ham exercises is just hooking foot into handle or cuff of a resistance band/tubing, with other end around heavy machinery/furniture and with leaning body forward, lift leg purposefully behind you and do fast reps and high ends also with this, like cathe would (see Oxygen mag for April or March which has this exercise in it). You won't need deadlifts with these exercises, they are superior and use no weight except body weight, etc .

I absolutely agree with Clare's suggestions. These substitutions are WAY superior to deadlifts in my humble opinion.
