Are there any healthy supplements to "up" energy?

crazystepr

Cathlete
I am so tired. Seriously. I've always been tired, (I have horrible sleep apnea) but it's worse than ever lately. Maybe I'm just in a bit of a funk that I need to get over. I should probably have my iron checked too--it's been a while.

Does anyone know of any supplements that I could take that might help increase my energy? Something to add to my protein shakes, etc?
I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts. Thanks. :)

RE: Are there any healthy supplements to

A few months back, I was so tired with wedding stress and dieting and so forth that I started taking a multi-vitamin. I got the one from GNC that says "Active" and I really like it, and I definitely notice a difference. I think it makes my hair and skin look great too!!

Good luck, I certainly understand how frustrating this can be!

Ohh, I want to know this too. I have terrible insomnia and I'm addicted to coffee and diet soda.

I've been taken CLA for the past week and a half and I feel like my energy has been up. Not in a jittery way either. I did some research on the internet before I bought it and it seemed alot healthier than fat burners and such that are out there.

Next time I'm at GNC I'm going to get that multivitimn. I need to start taking one.

I think the first step is to deal with your sleep apnea (if it really is apnea, it can be quite a serious condition). No matter what kind of 'energy enhancers' you try (natural or otherwise) it will be like trying to put a tiny band-aid on a deep gash unless ou address the lack of sleep first.

It might help to raise the head of your bed (get some wooden blocks to raise it just a couple of inches). This helps any sinus congestion to drain rather than accumlate and possibly contribute to your sleep apnea.

A couple of natural energy enhancers to try :

Yerba Maté (a South-American tea).

You might want to try nutritional yeast powder(NOT brewer's yeast). It's high in B vitamins, which are good for energy. Sprinkle it on soups or popcorn (it's got kind of a 'cheesy' flavor), or mix a spoonful in a glass of o.j. (I know, "cheesy" and "O.J." don't sound like they go well together, but the NT cuts the acidity of the OJ, and the OJ mutes the cheesiness: it tastes really good).

Panothenic acid which is actually a B vitamin is fabulous for nourishing overused adrenal glands. Try taking it seperate...I have done this when I feel sluggish and it worked. I also found out my T3 levels were low so am on a tiny bit of thyroid hormone...made the biggest difference ever!:D

RE: Are there any healthy supplements to

I sometimes find myself with a pattern of not sleeping. I normally take a multivitamin, add in a B complex (seems to help with the peri-menopausal symptoms), and some Evening Primrose (CLA basically). With my typical exercise routines, 3 days lifting, 3 cardio, I am usually able to sleep. I hit the spa at least a few times per week also and that helps with relaxation or a warm shower an hour before bed also helps relax me.

Another thing that I will do is add a 27 mg tablet of iron if I haven't been eating much beef just to up my iron a bit. Last time I went to give blood I was too low and they wouldn't take it.

When I find myself not sleeping well for a couple of days in a row then I will take a couple of 3 mg. Melatonin pills and it seems to have helped me.

Hope you find something to help soon or maybe you do need a checkup.

Maca root powder is also good for the adrenals. Some products come with it in (like Vega meal replacement), but you can get just the powder an mix in into a smoothie (it has a mild, carmally flavor that mixes well with chocolate and/or banana).

Brendan Brazier adresses adrenal fatigue in his "Thrive" books (and recommends maca and yerba maté).

Oh, trust me, it's sleep apnea. I've had four sleep studies done, gone through three different C-Paps, been to various specialists, and nothing helps. I'm part of the 4% of people for whom there's basically no cure. It's a really strange, horrible way to live to be honest. Don't even ask me how I exercise. I have no idea. I just kind of push through.

Anyway, thanks for the advice everyone. I'll look into it.

Bee Pollen is supposed to be good for energy also. I eat it, but only ocassionaly so I can't vouch for the benefits.:)

RE: Are there any healthy supplements to

The only supplement I find that helps is Vit B 12 sublingual. That can get me going and short circuit my need for caffeine.

RE: Are there any healthy supplements to

I take CoQ10, CLA, a multi and B vitamin too. I tend to see a more immediate difference with the CoQ10.

Allison, do you by any chance have allergies? I have absolutely no sleeping problems, but lately I've found it almost impossible to stay awake past 8:00 pm. I couldn't figure out why I was having such trouble keeping my eyes open, then I finally realized I'd developed pollen allergies. The only symptom I have is burning, tired eyes, but it was enough to put me right to sleep b/c I just couldn't keep them open.

I'm sure there are other spring allergy symptoms that would cause exhaustion. Just a thought, but maybe that's part of the problem?
