Are there any 60 y.o. Catheletes in the house?

Yesterday was my 50th birthday. I'm still having some trouble getting use to that number because in my mind, I'm still 37. I've been working out with Cathe for about 5 years or so now. I consider myself in better fitness shape now than ever before. I got to thinking this morning that in 10 years I'll be 60!!! and wondered whether I'll still be able to work out as hard as I do now. I love high intensity cardio and recently I've been lifting heavier than ever before. I cant imagine being 60 and still doing that.

Are there any 55+ catheletes still working as hard as when they were in their 40"s and 30"s? I'd love to hear any advise, challenges you've had to overcome, and goals you've achieved.

Thanks for letting me share.

Carmen.

Happy 50th, Carmen! I'll be 54 in a couple months and I think I'm working out harder than I was in my 30's and 40's! I also still think I'm 37:), and everyone says I look way younger than I am, and I think the working out has a lot to do with that.

I've also been wondering how long I'll be able to keep it up at this pace, but I envision myself pumping iron when I'm 85!!! I'm thinking that I'll have to modify the cardio intensity at some point, especially since lately I've noticed my feet aching more than normal at times (but I also need new w/o shoes!).

My sister is 73, soon to be 74. She looks 20 yrs younger. She works out every day. She does pilates, power sculpt, yoga...zumba...you name it, she does it, and she had 2 knee replacements a couple years ago! Most people are shocked when they find out her age. The fitness instructor in one of her classes commented the other day about her fitness level!

So working out will keep us young!...and besides, age is just a number, or so I keep telling myself....!!!!

Carmen,

I am 58 - 59 in January. I didn't wo when I was in my 20's and 30's so I am lifting a lot more. I don't do any high impact moves so I modify, modify, modify. I use a low step or no step.

Think about Jack LaLane! Didn't he keep up his fitness level way into his, what do they call them, "golden" years?

I hope I can still do that. This is something that I think about every now and then too! I'll be 48 in October and sometimes I think about the shoulda, coulda, wouldas. I try not to though! I am feeling better and doing more than I ever did in my 20s and 30s, too! I'm more active, stronger, have greater endurance, and try new and different things! Hope I'm still doing that at 60!

Carmen,

I'm 53. For the longest time I heard people talking about "joint pain" and had no idea what it felt like. I knew plenty about muscle pain, but not joint pain. At some point during this year I was crouching down to look through a file on the floor of my office. After a few minutes, I stood up and found my knees to be a bit stiff and a bit painful. Nothing dramatic, but I finally understood what joint pain was. Now I keep reminding myself not to crouch for more than a few seconds at a time. None of us is used to being older. Most of our lives we were young and spry. So it's all pretty much trial and error and getting used to the changes. If it hurts, stop doing it, or limit it. But I don't plan to cut down on anything unless my body tells me to.

I saw a physical therapist for a while this year and he told me I was one of the most flexible patients he has, and he didn't couch it in terms of age group! :D It was so cool to hear that!

My DH is 59 and he's still doing his century (100-mile) bike rides.

HTH somewhat.

I'm sorry, but I had to come back to say that your comment that in 10 years you're going to be 60 reminded me of the scene from When Harry Met Sally:

Sally: He just met her... She's supposed to be his transitional person, she's not supposed to be the ONE. All this time I thought he didn't want to get married. But, the truth is, he didn't want to marry me. He didn't love me.
Harry: If you could take him back now, would you?
Sally: No. But why didn't he want to marry me? What's the matter with me?
Harry: Nothing.
Sally: I'm difficult.
Harry: You're challenging.
Sally: I'm too structured, I'm completely closed off.
Harry: But in a good way.
Sally: No, no, no, I drove him away. AND, I'm gonna be forty.
Harry: When?
Sally: Someday.
Harry: In eight years.
Sally: But it's there. It's just sitting there, like some big dead end. And it's not the same for men. Charlie Chaplin had kids when he was 73.
Harry: Yeah, but he was too old to pick them up.

Oh, and this from Ab Fab:

Bo: She's not handling this 40 thing too well, is she? I mean, golly, I wish I could tell her it's no big deal. I had a ball on my 40th birthday. I felt really strong, really sorted-out about it. I realized what a lucky, wonderful person I was. And whether in your 30s or your 40s, you're still the same gorgeous person. Enjoy life!

Mother
: When will you be 50?

[Bo starts hyperventilating.]
Marshall: She hasn't started 50 therapy yet.

:D

I just turned 57. I still workout hard. I don't work out as long as I did 20 years ago, but I think that is just something I finally learned to be smart about. I worked out 3-5 hours a day back then. I am sure that would have lead to lots of issues eventually. I spend more time on flexibility now than I used to and a little less time on cardio. I do have bone loss issues as I have aged and take medication. I go for yearly physicals and the doctor asks me questions and seems to think I am doing things right.
Funny, she called recently and wanted to know what HRM I had:)
A few things pop up here and there but I think that I am as active as ever. I have an aunt who is 9 years older than me that works out. She visited me and used my Bowflex. She likes to jump rope. She stays in great shape even though she has had to deal with Lupus.

I will be 60 in November. On Saturday I did Step Jump Pump, and I'm considering doing that one again on my 60th birthday. Other candidates would be Imax2 and Step Blast. Or, if I have STS Cardio by then, perhaps one of them!

In my 20s and 30s I never worked out, and was carrying 150+ pounds of extra weight. I was morbidly obese for my entire adult life up to the age of 45! I was sick of being imprisoned by my own fat, so I did something about it. With my dietary changes, I began a daily walking regime -- walking was all I could manage at the time. As I became smaller and more fit, I reached out for more challenges. I started video exercise with Richard Simmons, loved it but soon I needed more advanced work. Eventually I found Cathe.

45 years of obesity did some damage to my body, but I do have great genes. My body will NOT do "tuck jumps", but I can do most of Cathe's higher intensity moves! My range of motion is not what Cathe's and crew's is, but it's not bad for an old lady. I modify moves, but not a whole lot.

As I look at that Big Six-OH I'm just grateful not to be locked inside that prison and to be able to do what I can do. I'm truly blessed. I abused my body, but it forgave me my trespasses and I'm one of the fittest people I know of any age! I work hard to maintain it, but it's a joy to me.

I don't regret the loss of the body I had in my youth -- far from it! I might feel differently had I been a graceful athlete back then. But I do think attitude has a lot to do with it!

All I know is, on the morning of my 60th birthday, it'll be me and Cathe.

I usually don't post, but had to response. I was 62 in March. Today I did Insanity Max Interval Circuit. Sure there are some moves I modify, but I did the work out. If you sit around and tell yourself your old then you are old. Me I'm not old. I might be 62, but I'm not old. I plan on working out until they carry me away.

Okay, Rose. I love you. I just love you.

Well, this makes me feel better. I turned 50 this year and was wondering if I was foolish to preorder STS Cardio since I wasn't sure how much longer I would be able to workout as hard as I do. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love the posts from you 60 and over crowd! I turned 54 this summer and find I'm in better shape now then I ever was. Sure, I have more aches and pains then I used to, and I sometimes pop an Advil before bedtime, but I can do IMAX 2 and 3 on three risers and ran my first 5K in May. In June I ran my second and came in first in the "woman of a certain age" group.

Do any of you baby boomers think back to what your mother was like at your age? My mom would NEVER think of getting sweaty!

I saw a little news squib a couple of weeks ago that reported on a power-lifting competition for senior citizens. An 85-year-old woman who really had no meaningful weightlifting history won in her age class, benching 55 pounds. And about 10 years ago I met an 80-year-old woman who ran every day, and routinely ran in 5K and 10K events. She started running when she was in her 60's.

That, my friends, is our future, if we stick with what we're doing in the present.
