anyone with info re: the sacrum joint?

Dr said possibly sacroilitis (inflammation of the sacrum joint) a few weeks ago but the more I read about it, the more I'm finding it's sometimes related to Ankylosing Spondylitis which DOES NOT sound good as it can affect the heart and lungs too. Being a major hypochondriac anyway, this was not good infomrmation for me to come across. I was thinking I just "hurt" something during exercise. Does anyone know how likely it is to have problems with this joint just doing something wrong (lifting, twisting, etc)? Advil and Alieve did not make the pain go away (which isn't that bad anyway and ususally only comes on if I stand too long) so I'm wondering if there is even any inflammation present. Also, can a muscle spasm(s) temporarily straighten the spine until they relax?

Thanks

Kim

Hey Kim, so what brought you to the Dr. in the first place? Low back pain? As you already know sacroilitis is inflammation in the sacroiliac joint. This is such a complicated anatomical landmark, a lot going on here. The sacrum stablizes the pelvis and inserts like a wedge between the two hip bones (ilium), the top articulates with the last lumbar vertebra and the lower part with the tailbone (coccyx). Many muscles attach to the sacrum and the entire joint is wrapped in ligaments and connective tissue. Irritation or injury to any of the attaching structures can cause the inflammation. You should talk to your doctor about your concerns regarding Ankylosing Spondylitis. It is an unusual variant of rheumatoid arthritis so perhaps you could ask for a blood test for Rheumatoid factor. If it helps any ankylosing spondylitis usually occurs in males around 30 years of age....you really should talk to your doctor about your concerns. HTH.

I'm going to talk to the chiro on Tues (this is just my next appt). What brought me to my primary dr a few weeks ago was low back pain (right side) that, initially, made it hard for me to stand up straight first thing in the AM. It started outof the blue, though I suppose I could've lifted wrong. It got better the longer I was up. Then I started getting pains down the side of my right thigh. They've never gone beyond that point and are always on the side (not back or front). They seem to come on after standing or walking for awhile. Sitting and laying (in any position) will bring immediate relief). It doesn't keep me from doing anything and I just did SS. At first, I noticed it a little when doing step but then got to where I had no pain at all. Just to be safe, and because I pulled a low back muscle 2 weeks ago, I haven't done any cardio recently.

Also, the dr (a P.A.) said probably SI after doing a series of physical tests in the office...no x-rays, mri's, etc.
