Anyone w/o 7 days a week?

I have read several posts and rotations that allude to the appearance of not taking a day off. Does this work for people? Do you feel burnt out or sore in the knees, joints, etc. if you don't take a day off? Just curious. I workout 6 days a week and always feel lazy and chubbier on my off days. Thanks!

Hi Jillybean,
I always take at least one day of per week. I feel as if my body really needs that day or two to rest and recover. I know Cathe herself has said that a rest day is as important as actually doing the workouts because this is when your muscles repair and build, particularly important when doing weight/strength training.
I think if I tried to work out 7 days a week, I would burn out really quickly. I know some people like to do stretching/pilates/yoga type workouts on their "day off" as this is what works for them, but personally I prefer to take a complete day off.

I do too and I don't take any days off, unless I'm really sick.

If nothing else, I racewalk for an hour or do intervals on the treadmill.

I've always exercised 7 days a week with no problems at all, but I do wonder what would happen if I took a rest day every week because it seems to be recommended by every fitness professional. I don't seem to have signs of overtraining and rarely get sick. However, I'm going to have a baby in 4 months and I'm sure I'll be taking lots and lots of rest days after that!!

I workout every day. I either run or lift weights w/cathe and I walk every day on my lunch hour. About once a month I take a total rest day where I do nothing but take a walk. Haven't had any problems

Hi Jillybean,

I make myself take one day a week off.

In the past I have done 7 days a week. I found my workouts not as effective. I wasn't (couldn't) giving it my best effort. Found myself wanting to nap in the afternoon and not much energy for the rest of the day.

I do feel "antsy" on my day off, but the benefits outway them. I'm ready to start fresh. Feel more energy and can give the workout more mental energy and focus.

One other benefit is I don't have to get up super early on my day off to work out!

I work out 7 days/week too, but my 7th day (Sunday) is a light day such as either yoga or a stretch video. Every now and then if I have some "super surge" of energy I'll do a cardio video + my stretch, but I usually reserve the 7th day for stretching/yoga.

Funny I too use to want to work out 7 days a week - I now find the 6 allows my body to heal -particulary if you are lifting heavy - you really do come back stronger!

I've now learned to love my day off - I have it on my list along with 3 day legs 3 day upper body - 4 cardio - 1 rest!

Now it's like a bonus i give myself on a day where I'm busy - sick etc.

good luck

I am a 7 day a week person. I definitely alernate upper body, lower body... never working the same body part two days in a row.

For me it's actually more of a "I have the time, so why not" type thing, instead of fearing taking a day off. However, I recently went on a week long vacation and was unable to work out every day. I managed to get in 3 workouts in a 7 day period, with a lot of walking and running every day. I suffered no setbacks from slacking off, so I would say that either way (taking a day off, or not) is just as effective. I think it really depends on what works best for you personally!

I'm the same as GetnFit (Donna)--I use the 7th day for yoga or Pilates. But, since I've been almost completely laid off for the past 3 weeks and with 2 more weeks to go..minimum (all I can do is upper body weights, abs, and some Pilates)--I thought for sure I'd gain an immense amount. I've not changed my eating much--and the huge weight gain I was expecting hasn't happened. I miss, miss, miss my cardio (for the endorphins?)--but, I guess muscle mass and base metabolism works. When I go back to it--I will still try for 7 days of something...Murph

6 days a week is max for my lifestyle. As a married mom of four, the weekend can be very busy with kid sporting events. So I aim for one weekend workout, and 5 weekday workouts. The rest is relaxing, and on Monday I am ready to go!

Take time to enjoy those who matter most to you & do all things in moderation :)

Hi Jillybean,

I try to take one day off, and one of my workouts days is a double workout, like yoga and cardio. I do this because I need to fit in 3 strength and 4 cardio a weeks or I feel like I'm cheating. But if I don't have time to do that double workout on that particular day I sometimes just workout all 7 days for 1 hour each day. I don't do it all the time, but when I do it never bothers me because I always listen to my body. If I feel a little tired I lower my step for IMAX or lower my weights for PH or run 4 miles instead of 5 or whatever.
