Anyone visit a naturopath?

Perimenopause has recently switched into high gear and so I have been considering a visit to a naturopath in the hopes that treatment with bio-identical, plant derived hormones would help alleviate the symptoms. I understand that there is controversy with that method and would appreciate anyone's comments regarding their experience with a naturopath. Thanks in advance! Now I need to go douse myself with ice water........

Elaine,

A little over a year ago, I visited a naturopathic doctor to help with fatigue, chronic sore throats (over a year duration) and elevated liver enzymes. My regular doctor didn't seem too concerned or helpful. Turns out I had mono! (at age 36) She started me on several supplements; I had to give myself vitamin B injections 3 times a week! I also rested, did sweat baths, started eating better. In about 3 months, I truly felt better! My liver enzymes returned to normal, I haven't had a sore throat since, and my energy level is way up!! I feel great. I am so thankful that I went and will definitely seek their help again when needed. I hope your experience will be as positive as mine was!

I know what you mean about your regular doctor not seeming to be concerned. It seems as if my doctor thinks that I should just deal with night sweats and sleeplessness. I am very frustrated with the lack of care in this particular area. I've actually just been toying with the idea of visiting a naturopath and I guess I was teetering on the edge because your post pushed me right over. Thanks so much for the input.:)

I've been seeing a naturopath for a year, but not for anything related to menopause. After 2 years, multiple symptoms, hundreds of dollars spent on a neurologist, gastroenterologist, ear/nose/throat doctor (don't want to spell THAT one out!), I was desperate. I had so many symptoms across the board, but each specialist only cared about the ones related to their field.

My ND spent HOURS asking me questions, reading 10 years of lab work (I had to track them down from several different doctors), and having me track sleeping/exercising/eating/drinking/pooping (sorry!)/social interaction for a week. I was just so happy someone listened and actually thought things might be related!

After a year, my labwork results are excellent, only have a couple areas she wants me to be better on (but it's not by much). I can't say enough about seeing an ND. They really look at the big picture, and it's amazing how much knowledge they have about the human body. I have pages and pages of notes that she writes on my visits, then copies for me.

I should add that I only had experience with "traditional" doctors until last year, it's all I ever knew. Best of luck to you! I don't think you'll regret it!

Gee, thanks Elaine. I had never heard the word "naturopath" before, but just looked it up and it sounds very interesting. I love the idea of a doctor schooled in a variety of different methods. Traditional doctors really can be very disappointing. I think that in general their focus is on keeping you alive rather than keeping you feeling good. And that's a very big difference! Please let us know how it goes.

Elaine, I bet you your doctor is a man or a woman who has never experienced hot flashes and sleep disturbance assoc with menopause. Give me a break!! No one should just have to "deal" with it. Hope you find some answers.

I recently started seeing a naturopath. I have been having digestive problems for years that come and go. In September, my stomach really started to bother me, bloating, gas (too much info.). I had gone the route of the traditional doctor years before with no help. They sent me to specialists who said I was fine.
As Elaine mentioned the naturopath wanted to know everything about me, physically and emotionally. She told me she taught I may have allergies, so I did a IGG food Screen which uses my blood sample.
It showed what I need to eliminate and foods I need to cut back on.
So far, by following this advise I have had less stomach problems.

Here is a link to the website of my doctor. The first article gives you a background of what is naturopathic medicine.
