Anyone using CALM or Proactiv?

I used Proactiv for a while and it really dried my skin. Now, I'm using CALM, but I hate the texture of the face wash. It has also dried my skin. I bought an Aveeno Bar today to wash my face and use the CALM lotion every other day. Any suggestions/experiences to share?

HI Lisa,

I have a very oily T-zone and TTOM acne. I recently started up on ProActiv again. A year ago, I tried the Rodan & Fields CALM regimen but didn't really care for it. I loved the toner but "drank it up." The step #3 treatment was almost like glue and difficult to spread on. I also didn't feel like the cleanser was anything special.

I'm assuming that you have acne prone skin, but aside from that, is is normal/dry/oily? I suppose that it must be sensitive also.

Not to sound expert-ish (because I'm not!)- if you tell me a little more about your skin I can probably suggest other products I've tried.

I suggest the book "The Acne Prescription" by Perricone, following his diet recommendations have cleared up a lifelong problem with cystic acne. I got it out of the library.

Gina, I have sensitive normal to oily skin in the T-zone. I have now been using CALM for four days. My skin seems to be clearing up, but it is dry so I started using my L'oreal moisturizer at night. You're right about step #3. I am just thinking of using these products until the end and then deciding if I should go back to proactiv or get these again. I've been reading their book and it seems that CALM is milder, but at this point I am open to any suggestions/advice. Thanks a bunch! NIVEA

Jen, I will check that book out. Is there anything that stand sout that you can mention?

For 22 years of suffering with cystic acne and trying gazillions of products and oral meds, the only thing that worked for me was Accutane.

Edited to say I used Cetaphil for the dryness.

Rhiannon...
How much was the accutane regimen, approximately? I know insurance likely does not cover it....

Lisa,

DDF (Doctor's Dermatologic Formula http://www.sephora.com and http://www.ddfskin.com) is always a line I recommend. There are many products geared toward sensitive and acneic skin. Everything on the DDF site is divided nicely into categories, so you can check out which products may work for you. As someone else mentioned, a lot of people have luck with Cetaphil products. I think when starting any new skin care regime, the potential for irritation and dryness exists. What you are doing now, adding moisturizer at night, is a great idea. I think about after 2 weeks you'll be able to determine if CALM is for you.

I just wanted to put in my two cents here...

When I was a teenager, I never had acne problems. I always had oily skin but according to everyone around me "that is a good thing".

Right about the time my hormones went into overdrive, the zit train pulled into the station! ;(

Finally after using everything under the sun (Proactiv...you name it) and spending lots of money, I went to a skin doctor. Just let me tell you...it was money well spent and frankly, the prescriptions have saved me money in comparison to all of the junk I have bought over the years. I think people would be suprised how helpful a dermatologist can be. It is not embarrasing, and I walked away breathing a sigh of relief.

Hope this helps,

Gina, thanks for your reply. That makes a lot of sense. I will wait 2 weeks and see. I will also check those websites out.

Melissa,

I totally agree that going to a dermatologist can be economical. If you have a good prescription program, many of the Rx products will be cheaper than OTCs. I have yet to find a dermatologist that could recommend a specific cleanser of sunscreen though, so for those things, word of mouth and trial/error are helpful.

What are you using now...if you don't mind sharing!

Thanks,
Gina

For me the best product is retin-a. Its prescription only and you need to be really careful about using sunscreen. As a plus, its the same ingredient in wrinkle fighters so it helps acne and wrinkles. My insurance covers it. I use retin-a in the evening and then in the morning I use an oilfree moisterizer with sunscreen in it. That part is a must because retin a can dry out your skin and make it burn easier so those 2 products work well. I use the nutrugena oil free with spf 15.

I tried proactive and it made me so itchy and the main ingredient bleached and ruined my good towels. I was so frustrated! Be careful if you try it to keep it off your clothes.

Well, I am using an oral antibiotic and a Retin A cream. As for the cleanser...I use Neutrogena cleanser. Sunscreen for my face is covered by the foundation I wear (15 SPF). The only bummer is that the days of laying out for 5 hours tanning in the beautiful sunshine are over. That is the one thing that I had to give up. But, all in all to not have to wear makeup for covering dark spots and blemishes is a miracle!

Have a great day!!!

Melissa
