Anyone tried this ab exercise I saw in Oxygen?

It's really challenging.

Standing straight with one 15 or 20 lb weight gripped overhand in right hand, bend to the right as far as you can go, slowly, four counts, really stretching. Then, using oblique muscles, lift weight slowly six counts. Do 3 sets of 10 reps on each side, alternating.

I did this last week and REALLY felt it in my obliques and hips for a couple of days. I did it again last night.

Just something a bit different :)

i have tried this before.seems like a real easy exercise until you start engaging better control and adding more weight.but i tend to rush things so i do much better with a video so i have somebody reminding me of form. maybe cathe should do something like this in one of her ab routines!!!

Yeah, this one has been around for a while. You have to be careful with it--if you're prone to being large waisted like me you'll want to decrease the weight & up the reps. I stopped doing them entirely b/c my waist was getting way too big & I couldn't find pants that fit right.

Laura,

Interesting point. I notice that my waist has been getting thicker as well. Good for overall strength, but for looks, just depends on the look you want. Oxygen is a great magazine though with alot of good workouts in there. I have tried the shoulder workout in the 75 Anniversary issue. Now that is a good one for shoulders which focuses on entire shoulders (front, back, mid, etc.)

Thanks everyone. I will lighten the weight. My waist is 25" and I don't want it any bigger :) .

WOW...I don't recall a time in my adult life when my waist was EVER that small!!! The smallest I can recall it being as an adult is 27 and even THAT was eons ago! That's what happens when ya got a naturally thick waist and narrow hips for your frame like I do! YUCK! x(

I avoid weighted oblique work (except for very light weight, lke 2-3 pounds) because I don't want that area to build up and give me a thick waist, do I wouldn't use this one.

Wendy,

You have to understand, my frame is petite. I'm only 5' tall. I have an hourglass figure. Let me tell you...my hips make up for my waistline :). Heck, my waist was 24" until I turned 42

You can also do this without any weights. It helps define the waistline. This exercise can make your waist thicker if you do it a lot using heavier weights.
