Anyone thinking of what their New Year's Resolution will be

I know it is kind of early but I quit drinking Coke (soda) this year So I am pondering now my sweettooth I am considering giving up donuts, cookies, ice cream and chocolate candy bars. It seems I have a terrible sweettooth after lunch and dinner. Dairy queen will be tough through the summer. Birthdays we have someone celebrating in every month. It is terrible when I get together with my sister and I see her daily. She thinks I will not be able to do it.

I was drinking almost a 12 pack of coke daily and I quit this year so I know I can do it. Anyone else do something similar and how do you curb cravings. I have tried fruit plus winter is expensive and poor selection in Michigan.

Beth -
I stopped the NY Resolution thing many years ago... I found it made me look at my life as things I STILL wanted to do. Instead I started a little tradition and I keep a running list the entire month of December of anything & everything I have done, improved upon, conquered etc..the past year. Then on NY Eve or Day I sit with myself and look at all I really have accomplished, become, and how I conytributed to the world, my family , my friends.... It has never ceased to amaze me how much I really do grow & do every year - even those years when I might feel like it was a "bad" year. Anyway.... great question and I'm glad you brought it up as its time for me to start looking for the annual pad I use!
Happy NY to you!

RE: Anyone thinking of what their New Year's Resolution...

I often crave something sweet after dinner so I keep a bag of hershey kisses or mini snickers around and have one (or two }( ) so that usually takes care of it. I try to serve fruit with dinner like a bowl of strawberries and sometimes that will curb the craving but in MN the fruit choices are getting slim also. It helps if I make a cup of green tea and sip that in the evening otherwise I tend to snack too much.

My resolution is to start P90X which I just ordered and to cut out the night-time snacking. I need to get serious about dropping the 10 lbs that have been hanging around way to long.

JJ: Good Luck with your P90X and your night time snacking.

Traci--I love what you do!

I realized a long time ago that people place too much expectation on New Year's Day. After all, it is just another day. I think if you put too much emphasis on changing something on this particular day then you are just setting yourself up for failure(I'm pretty sure there is even evidence to this--just think of all the people you know who don't keep their resolutions). I write out monthly resolutions/goals and go from there. For example, if I wanted to give up sweets(which I probably should) I would set a goal for January of either not having any donuts or maybe not having any donuts before 4pm. At the end of the month I would see how I did and then set my goal for February accordingly.

I know some people do have the will power to really stick to a big New Year's resolution and I think that is great. Just not me. :) BTW, good job on giving up the soda. That can be a tough one.:)

Congratulations on your success of eliminating the Coke. I used to have a sweet tooth in the morning, after lunch and after dinner. Instead of trying to cut everything out at once, I started small. I started with cutting out sweets (chocolate, chips, etc.) in the morning and if I snack, I have an orange, apple, etc. I no longer have that craving in the morning. It is absolutely gone. Now that I have accomplished that, I am starting with the after lunch junk snack. I have cut that out and therefore, I only treat myself once a day after dinner and soon I will be cutting that out. Take it slow and don’t do too much at once. I wish you luck on your success and I know you can do it.

As for my New Years Resolution, I have not thought too much about it yet. But I think that is a great time to make a new change for the new year.

Jennifer Thank you for your reply and tips. Cold turkey approach seemed to have worked this year I am going for it again. I never in 34 years made a New Years Resolution my first was successful so I am going to do it again.

To purchase, and actaully wear :), attractive matching undergarments. This has been my resolution for three years. Aside from the standard loose ten lb resolution. I just can't seem to bring myself to stop wearing the comfy beige or white "work under everything" undergarments.

What a great resolution! :)

Thanks, but like any really great resolution......we have to actually do it. Man, those comfy bras and panties are hard to let go of ;) It's not that they are granny panties. They are just all THE SAME, EVERY DAY, EVERY OUTFIT! This will be year four of my resolution. I feel the pressure to succeed mounting.........I'll report back february 1, 2007 with my results.

Good question! I've been thinking about this for almost 2 months now. Like one of the first replies above, I am changing the way I do NY resolutions this year!

First, I knew that I did NOT want to resolve to get back to goal weight. I wanted to BE AT goal weight on 01/01/07. That got my butt in gear about 8 weeks ago and I've shed almost all of the 18 pounds I'd put on since Feb of this year.

Second, I am now saying that I will do something for others. I actually started this last year and felt really good about the accomplishments I did. Instead of doing something new or different for ME, I reolve to do something new or different for OTHERS. 2006...I ran a marathon in Disney and raised over $5,00 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Something like that.

Great question and thread!
