dr told me i need to start these-- scared to death of all the side effects-- what has your experience been?
thank you.

I have been taking them for about a year and they are about the best things ever. I had a whole host of weird issues that no doctor had put together. Then I went to a gastroenterology PA who figured out the problem immediately and put me on meds. Many of my odd symptoms resolved within a couple of days and I have never looked back. My experience has been nothing but good.

I take Protonix once a day and have not had any issues. It is amazing how quickly it helped. I have been taking Protonix for 5 years.

I've been on them for years. I've taken Protonix, Omeprazole, Prevacid, Prilosec, and now I'm on the generic version of Prevacid which is working great. The only drug I have ever had side affects with was Nexium. I've known a lot of people who had problems with that drug. I've never had a problem at all with any of the others. I just found that at the end of the day Prevacid works the best. I'm sure your doctor will tell you this, but depending on what he puts you on, these drugs are known to cause Calcium deficiencies with long term use - i.e. leading to osteoporosis. Because I that, I am also on a high dose of Calcium and VD daily. I have to take those several hours after taking the Prevacid so that they don't cancel each other out. That's the only real side affect I worry about.

I do.

they want me on omeprazole-- what type and how much are you taking?

I take this. It's generic for Prilosec. I just started about three weeks ago due to extreme stomach pain (probably an ulcer), and it's helped tremendously. I've been taking acid reducers for years for chronic GERD, but it wasn't doing the trick.

I can' say that I have any side effects, but also haven't been taking it long-term. Talk to you doctor about your concerns, but acid reflux can cause serious problems if left untreated. Best to get it under control and allow your stomach and esophagus to heal.

(I'm taking it twice a day -- morning and night -- on my doctor's recommendation. It's twice the dose recommended on the Prilosec box, but I'm trusting his advice.)

I use to take omeprazole once I was diagnosed with GERD, once a day. About a week into it I had horrible symptoms. Light headed, couldn't think clearly, felt something (I don't know what) was going to burst. Had to go to the hospital. Once I was admitted (about 4 hours from the first symptoms) all the symptoms went away. That's how long the drug lasted in my body before it started wearing off. Once you start taking it, it gets into your system more and more, but the initial reaction is about 4 hours.

I was told omeprazole is the most common med for GERD. My doctor told me most people can tolerate it. That they even give this to babies who have acid reflux problems. Unfortunately not me. I decided not to take meds at all after that experience.

I did a lot of research then, and learned DGL (deglycyrrhizinated Licorice) was mostly used by GERD patience. I started on it right away. Had to adjust it to 1/4 tablet every 4 hours, even during the night. My body is very sensitive. You can get them on line cheaper than the vitamin stores or health food stores. I get mine at Vitacost. It's very reasonable in comparison.

Been taking DGL now for over 6 months and reduced the supplement by 1/4 tablet once a day or once every other day. I've learned what my body can eat and what it reacts to.

Every body is different, you just have to find what is right for you.
