Anyone struggle after P90X recovery week?

I just finished phase 1 of P90x and started phase 2 today. I felt like I really struggled with weights today in chest, shoulders and triceps and was wondering if it was because of the recovery week. Although it was still a tough week with yoga and core synergistics. Anyone experience this?

I bet you're struggling because Chest, Shoulders and Tris is KILLER. I like to call it the "workout of death". I think it's the most difficult of all the workouts in the series. Even my SO approaches it with some trepidation;)

ETA - when I started Phase 3 after my second recovery week, I found I'd made HUGE gains in strength from Phase 2. Especially in number of push-ups I could do and weight I could lift.

(((((I bet you're struggling because Chest, Shoulders and Tris is KILLER. I like to call it the "workout of death".))))

Cracked me up!!!!!!!!! I'm in week 2 now and was thinking how much I love no dread factor days..... I spoke too soon!

I am also just starting phase 2. I did that workout yesterday for the first time. That workout is hard. But I was so happy I finally can do some push ups on my toes. I am mixing in my new Cathes which I love:) I was sick about two weeks ago and now I am getting sick again:( My husband gave it back to me. So I didn't workout today. I am so tired of being sick I hate not being able to workout.

Agree CST is a KILLER workout. I had been forwarned to just laughed at the 1 arm pushups and plyo push ups.

You will LOVE BB!

Steph ! congrats on the Boy pushups! I started with 0 and am doing 20 plus now! Congrats!

Get well first and you will be back with a vengence!

I'm in my 2nd week of Phrase 3 and though I 'feel' stronger it hasn't shown in my stats, especially in my pushups. My numbers are either the same or have even dropped (decline pushups anyone?) I'm trying to not be too disappointed.

I do the one arm and pylo pushups on my knees and I actually like these!

P90X is a great program and I will definitely do it again!

I'm in my 3 week of Phase 3 doing the Classic doubles rotation. I do remember sometimes feeling wornout in the beginning of phase 2. I started eating more carbs and made sure I had enough to eat, especially on weight days. I'm feeling tons of energy in phase 3 . Hang in there! :)

I have been able to build up to a good amount of regular toe pushups due to phase 1 and all the pushups you do in that workout. So, I was surprised when I did chest, shoulders and triceps today and could barely do any. I spent most of my time on my toes! I also have weak wrists and usually use push up bars. Alot of these pushups were the style that you can't do that, so my wrists are also hurtin' a bit.

"Anyone experience this?"

Yup! I sure did!

After the recovery, it seemed like I was almost starting over again. I was really glad I had kept up with my worksheets, because I was determined to add at least one rep, or increase one weight, with every workout.

I believe Tony said this whole program is designed to "never get easy". It employs the muscle confusion theory of exercise along with good, old fashioned training methods,(if I remember correctly) which will always challenge you and produce results.

Be encouraged. It is a good sign that you are working at a level you should be at. There were days that I was totally whipped, but I still got great results and I am sure you will, too.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. It's pretty clear then, my muscles are confused! ha

And in my earlier post I meant I spent my whole time on my knees, not toes.

I know there are a lot of threads on P90X.. can someone tell me how long each workout is? I am thinking of purchasing it but I have no idea of the length or what you do in "recovery week" etc. The BB website does not give much info on this series at all. Thanks!

Laura - the rotation is in three phases. You do three weeks (Phase 1), then a recovery week, three more weeks (Phase 2), then a recovery week, then four weeks (Phase 3).

The recovery weeks aren't rest weeks. They are recovery for your muscles. You don't do any heavy lifting. The only weight work you do is some very light stuff in Core Synergistics.

Fox2star: the workouts vary from 48 minutes (Cardio X) to 90 minutes (Yoga X). Most of them run around an hour. A typical week in Phase 1, for instance, in the Classic rotation, looks like this:

Mon - Chest and back, Ab Ripper X
Tues - Plyo X
Wed - Shoulders and Arms, Ab Ripper X
Thurs - Yoga X
Fri - Legs and Back, Ab Ripper X
Sat - Kenpo X
Sun - Rest or Stretch X

A recovery week doesn't have any heavy weighted work as I mentioned above. You do Core Synergistics twice, Kenpo once and the rest is Yoga and Stretch.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much for the descriptions.. what is the difference between the Classic and the Lean one? Also, I have a pull up bar attached to a doorway in my workout area ( basement).. is this good enough for all the pull ups I heard about? ( I can't even do one! LOL!) or do you start with a band and work your way up? Sorry for all the questions, but I just bought Cathe's new series, and am now looking at this one! too much money but I can't help myself!

You can use the bands in conjunction with the pull-up bar. That's how I started. Now I do pull-ups, but they're assisted (with a stool - don't worry, they show the modification in the workouts). The difference in the rotations is just the order and frequency of the workouts.

Yeah, and just to chime in here, I felt very worked out on my recovery week. I found Core Synergistics tough and especially 90 minutes of yoga 2 times in the week really pushed me to my limits. I'm not very flexible and have never been a fan of yoga. I still completely struggle, but I feel like it has added another dimension to my workouts. I also bought a yoga block because it really helped me with the positions. I was even sore after an hour of the Stretch day, go figure.

Wow, what a great thread! I'm encouraged by reading all the responses. P90X has helped me in many ways, particularly in understanding the importance of flexibility. I tried a yoga dvd before beginning this program but couldn't really get into it but after doing YogaX once a week, I'm actually more flexible and I'm enjoying the practice! I've bought 2 more dvds and have made yoga part of my weekly routine.

Thanks for writing in!
