Anyone own a Bosu??

Lately I have been a bit bored with my cardio and strength training. I have been looking into Pilates and Bosu training. I got some great suggestions for Pilates and have ordered a few dvd's already  . I have been checking out the Bosu for a while and noticed that it's a bit pricey. For those of you who have one..Is it worth it?? There aren't many workouts out there either. I did notice Rob Glick which is great because I like his step workouts. Any info would be great!!

YES it's worth it. I've had mine for almost two years. Mindy Mylrea has done several with the BOSU and there is a DVD by Body Bar that has both a Mindy and Keli Roberts workout on it called Explode. They incorporate the Body Bar and the BOSU (love these). Sometimes I substitute certain stability ball moves with the BOSU and you can adapt most floor ab work onto the BOSU. Also, I adapt some of my older steps tapes, like Cathe's Step Heat or Step Max which have less complex choreography and use it for step (that kicks it up a notch!). I do have Rob's cardo tape and a couple of others, but I find I do alot of adapting so the fact that there isn't a lot of workouts out there isn't an issue for me.

I know there are several other people on this forum who love the BOSU also. I think it's a great prop and have not been disappointed but it's not for everyone. Hopefully you'll get some more opinions!

YES! And I LOVE mine!! I have BOSU Reactive Strength & Power with Gay Gasper, and BOSU Cardio Fusion with Rob Glick, and I love them!!

These are good. I used it in my Cardio Kickbox class and liked it. You can lift light weights while standing on it and work your balance.
It's a severe safety hazard in my view if it gets soaked with sweat. Miss the top by just a bit when stepping, down you go.........
They say it's great for pushups by flipping it over on the round side, grabbing the side handles, and doing the pushups. Never liked it for that though. Seemed like more trouble than it was worth because I could never get comfortable with it.

Trev, you do pushups on the flat side in "Reactive Strength & Power", and it really tests your balance that way! Don't know why, but for some reason I can easily do them straight-legged that way, but I'm still on my knees doing "girl pushups" off the BOSU! LOL!! Makes no sense, I know!

I am not a BOSU fan. I found it trashed my knees.

The top of the ball is so unstable that it put way too much stress on my knees. I used two of the workouts that came with the ball - Glick, I think and the pilates type one. They needed icing for a week (not that I did it that much with 4 young children in my house!) I asked the BOSU importer who sold it to me (I live in the Netherlands)if I had used it wrong but they had no insight beyond the ususal Yadie Yadie.

For perspective I am an advanced excerciser including lots of weight lifting so my knees are realtively strong. Back to trying to learn Cathe step choreography to try to get some change in my excercise life!

I severly sprained my ankle last November while doing Rob's Bosu (those stupid tick tocks) workout. I think I stepped on the hard plastic that encircles the Bosu, twisted my ankle when I feel to the ground. I ended up in an aircast and my ankle still twinges to this day.

I consider myself pretty coordinated generally so this really threw me (and my ankle) for a loop.

Just be careful when jumping on it.

I find these experiences interesting since I'm a klutz extraordinaire. I slip off my step all the time, and I really love my BOSU but I have to work hard to keep my balance. Of course, that's what it was designed to do. Work the core muscles and improve balance. Guess I've really been fortunate I've never been hurt falling off fitness equipment. Just want to step on my soapbox here for a minute though - and this post is NOT directed at any one particular individual, or meant to be preachy. Just being "nurse Carol" here.

ANY piece of fitness equipment can hurt you if you aren't careful, or are using it incorrectly, or I guess just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not accusing, just stating the obvious. You can knock yourself unconscious with a dumbell if you aren't careful how you're using it, or if it slips out of your hand the wrong way.

Here's to hoping anyone who decides to try a BOSU is mindful of the fact it's designed to be an unstable environment, and is careful and safe while using it, and does not get hurt.
