Anyone Jumprope?

Wow! I'm impress with your duration - Do you have any suggestions ? I am interested in pursuing roping as added cardio, but have no experience. How did you learn roping techniques?

I LOVE to jump rope! I teach a BC class and make them do it, too! But, for 60 minutes...Wow - YOU ROCK!

I bought a Nike weighted jump rope, but I have yet to use it! Once the weather sools down I will probably get outside and workout more.

I've heard of buddy lee but I use two workout DVD's from Michael Olajide called AeroJump Skills 1-2-3 which is all jump rope and AeroJump/Sculpt C.T.B.S. (which stands for Cut The B.S.). It's mostly jump rope and segments of resistance training - very brutal.

Yes, I do it as part of a circuit or Crossfit WOD (single jumps and double-unders).

Buddy Lee did a series of jumprope workshops for Crossfit. Here are links to the lecture clips, there are some great technique tips in here:

Jumping rope is an excellent thing to get proficient at.

Thanks for this link! My jumprope has been sitting collecting dust for a while and this is just what I need!

my calves kill too which has put me off - but you have inspired me - I'm all for short intense cardio blasts.
Is there a significant difference in calories expended if you 'mime' jump rope without the rope - I have a small space to work out in and I don't think i could manage a rope in there

Anyone have more info on getting started Jumping?

Thank you for posting this link Gayle! I would like to add jumping rope into my routine and was wondering if you or anyone have any advice on what type of rope and maybe a good instructional DVD to get started? I checked out Buddy Lee's site and there are a few so I would love some input from someone who has experience/knowledge on products?

Thank you!

It's funny that you started this thread because my friend just gave me a rebounder and I'm simulating jumping rope on that. Would I get the same benefits as jumping on a hard surface? Ya never know with exercising. My calves bothered me too but I think they'll adapt the more I do it.

What Happened To My Post?

I wrote a nice post full of tips on jumping rope and it's not here.

Anyways, whether you are a beginner or not, this is a great link:

For those who say their calves hurt, that could be for a number of reasons:

1. You're muscles aren't used to this form of exercise - which is natural with any new fitness programs

2. You're not varying your moves enough. If you are doing just the single bounce move, your legs will tire quickly. Change it up more frequently. For example 30-60 seconds of the single bounce move, then 30-60 of the boxer shuffle.

3. You're not stretching enough. I make it a point to stretch my calves several times during my routine. As soon as you feel like you can't jump anymore, stop, stretch and then continue with your routine.

4. Jumping on the wrong surface. No concrete, no stone floors. Jumping rope is high intensity and sometimes high impact (depends on the move). You have to jump on a surface that has some give like wood floors or interlocking foam mats (what I use).

5. Wrong sneakers. You should jump in cross trainers and there are sneakers on the market that are built specifically for those who do a lot of side lateral moves or jumping of any kind.

Another member mentioned she doesn't have a lot of space. You don't need that much space. As long your ceiling is high enough you can do it. I live in studio so you can't get much smaller than that.

Did I leave anything out?

One more tip:

Don't try to jump like Buddy Lee.:D
