Anyone from the Houston/Austin/San Antonio area?

I'm seriously looking at relocating into one of those cities in the next 12 months. I am especially interested in Houston because of their hospitality management/event planning program. Any insights into those cities and living in those cities? I hope to be able to fly into Houston in late May and spend a couple of weeks there to check out the amenities and job opportunities. Thanks.

Hi! I'm from just North of Houston (about 30 minutes). We live in Conroe. We love the area and there is so much do here. Our area is growing very quickly (close to The Woodlands, TX.) The only thing we don't like is that we used to be kind of "out in the country" and that has now changed. Our weather is hot and humid in the summer, pleasant, but humid in fall and spring, and not so cold in the winter. I don't know much about the hospitatility management/event planning program in the area. My husband and I are both RNs so know that the medical field is limitless in possibilities of employment/career.

We have family outside of Austin and my sister in law works for the Texas Medical Association there in Austin. She is in charge of planning meetings, continuing education opportunities for physicians, and other med. personnel. She does a lot of booking hotels, banquet centers etc. in and around the areas you mentioned. She might be able to give you more info. If you'd like for me to have her email you, let me know.

We are Texans and proud of it! Hope you enjoy your visit, and if you decide to move to the area - great!

I have lived in Houston most of my 52 years, and love it!

The pros:

1. It's so diverse - every nationality and culture is represented here - you can go to a different festival just about every weekend. This city just plain feels exciting. I work downtown, which is really booming now, and has a growing nightlife, including opera, ballet, theater, etc.

2. Employment opportunities are great right now. The medical center, especially, seems to be booming.

3. Three great seasons - spring, fall, and winter are wonderful.

The cons:

1. If you can't take the heat, don't even think about it - summers are brutal - it's the humidity.

2. Houston has finally clicked to the fact that roads are not adequate for the amount of traffic flow, and it seems like the whole city is under construction - it will be pretty bad for about the next 5 years.

I lived in Austin during my college years, and loved it - the hill country is incredibly beautiful, and, although summers are hot, they are not nearly as humid as Houston. Traffic is pretty bad, though, and jobs not as easy to find - every University of Texas alum would love to live there. I have only been to San Antonio a few times, but it's pretty.

My family has lived in California, Seattle, Phoenix, Ohio and Houston in the last ten years. When my husband decided to quit his job last year and start his own business, we decided to move back to Houston (actually Katy, right outside of Houston) from Columbus, Oh. We are very happy with our decision.

The people are extremely friendly here, the weather is good if you dont mind hot summers and housing is very affordable. Check out www.har.com to see to see the houses listed for sale in the mls. It's also a great place for eating out.

The Houston Independant School district isnt very good but there are several school districts in the area that are excellent. Katy Independant School District ranks very high nationally. My 8th grader went from almost failing 7th grade in Ohio to a B average here because of a great staff that motivate him.

Feel free to ask me any questions that you have.

I grew up in San Antonio. Its a diverse, friendly city with lots of culture and activities. There are lots of beautiful areas too, and the Riverwalk is a blast. The only thing I've never liked--very hot summers, but, that is pretty typical anywhere in Texas. My sister lives in Austin and loves it. Lots to do, fitness oriented, etc. Just lousy traffic. Good luck on your relocation, I wish you all the best no matter where you decide to end up.

Hi,

I moved to Houston (area) almost 2 years ago. I was recruited out of Edmonton, Alberta to teach at a high school here. I work for a school district in the Clear Lake area which is just south of Houston. I don't mind it at all. It is very humid and hot but being a teacher I was able to go back to Canada for the whole month of July (live the best of both worlds). I also went to Mexico in June for 2 weeks.
Anyway, I'd have to say it's a great place. I met and married my husband here (he grew up in the Clear Lake area). He is an incredible man and husband so I'm pretty happy I made the move to come here
:) Extra bonus: My in-laws are GREAT!
There are great job opportunities here.
If you are looking for a more liberal community, I've heard that Austin is the place to go. It has a huge college population there.
San Antonio is mostly based on tourism so if you want to get into the hospitality industry that is a great place. I LOVE San Antonio. I've been there 3 times already! The Alamo is really cool and the river walk. Very nice city.
Good luck in your quest!

Thanks for the information. I live in Northern Virginia now and can't imagine any worse traffic. In fact, I heard that the traffic here is in the top three - so many people move here to work in the government. The cost of living is very expensive. I want to move somewhere where the quality of life is much better. I also want to avoid smowly winters ( I have lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota, so I know about those types of winters!) Again, thanks for the input, and I would appreciate any other input if there is any!!!
