Anyone ever had one of these?

I went to the doctor on Thursday about this small pea size knot on my right palm just below my ring finer. It doesn't hurt (maybe a little ache now and then) and hasn't gotten bigger since I noticed it before Christmas. She told me it is a Ganglion cyst. Very common. They don't know what causes them or how to get rid of them naturally. She said that I should keep an eye on it (which is what I thought she would say) and if it got any bigger or painful then I could go to a plastic surgeon and have it removed. Anyone have one of these before?

Kim,
When I was growing up I remember my mom had one on her wrist that eventually went away on its own, but my neighbor had one kind of just below his thumb and that got so big I think he did have a surgeon remove it. So far as I know they're nothing to worry about and might even go away on its own. Have you poked around on google?

Yes, I have one, just above the top digit of my ring finger. I have had it about 8 years and it's never done anything, so I don't worry about it. At first, I didn't know what it was until the doctor diagnosed it as a harmless ganglion cyst. Months earlier I had been stung by a nasty hornet on my ring fingertip and thought maybe it was a stinger. Doc said no, that it was a ganglion cyst. It is the least of my worries these days. You can't even see it. I'm the only one who knows it's there.

Hi Kim, I have a ganglion cyst on my wrist, palm side beneath my thumb. It doesn't give me constant grief but sometimes it flares and is pretty tender. I can squish it down and make it disappear for a while but it comes back. It is the result of escaped synovial fluid within the tendon sheath, I saw an orthopedic specialist about it and he said that it could be operated on but more often than not they come back, mine lies very close to some nerves so there would be risk involved in removal so I've just learned to live with it. I've heard of people whacking it with a bible or any big book but I'm not about to try it.

I get them on my wrists. I keep shoving them down and i eventually break them. I banged one good(steering wheel) and broke it. I felt the fluid decipate.
If you let them go , they grow and get hard, then you have to have them removed surgically.

I had one right between the two bones in my right wrist. It used to swell up so bad I couldn't bend my wrist. I had it removed when I was around 16 and still have the scar from it across the top of my wrist. Have never had a problem with it since. I heard in the "old days", they used to wack them with a really big book (dictionary or something), but I opted for the surgery. ;)

I did. Was told I could have it removed but it might still come back. It was sore on and off but it went away completely and I haven't seen it for years. I say leave it alone unless its painful.

I had one between the bones in my left wrist. It was painful and restricted movement, so I had it removed. That was in the mid-70's and it has not grown back. I have been told that they do sometimes grow back, so removing them is not always the answer. If it isn't interfering with your daily activities, then it's probably best to leave it alone. Someone here mentioned that they used to use a big book or something to whack it with. My doctor jokingly called that "The Bible Method."

Yes, I have one in my wrist and have had it for years....despite different treatments. I had it drained a couple times, then surgically removed but it always comes back. I have to do pushups on my knuckels and wear a brace when it gets bad. I guess it's just one of those things I'll live with! If it starts to bother you, try draining it before surgery - you might get lucky!

Thanks guys. I just love this forum. Whenever I have a question about anything there is bound to be someone on here with an answer. I think I went to the doctor more for piece of mind to tell me not to worry about it.
