Anyone else giving out healthier treats this year?

My DH went out and bought bags of chocolate, but I just bought bags of mini boxes of organic raisins, little bags of sliced apples and chocolate granola bars. Our apartment building is filled with really young trick-or-treaters this year; it seems like about 75% of them are 5 or younger. I'm a grandma of a 2-year old who truly goes nuts for apples and raisins and the like, and who hasn't even tasted a piece of chocolate yet. I would hate to think of him eating lots of sugary junk. Anyway, we do have the chocolate for the older kids if they want it. Anyone else doing this or am I being the Grinch Who Stole Halloween?

It's Halloween, give them candy, or at least the choice to take the one they prefer, so maybe put it all in a basket and let them choose, there may be kids who consider the raisins a "treat". But IMO providing healthy alternatives is not really going to accomplish anything, a box of raisins is not going to make a kid think twice about eating their giant bag of candy.

I think the toothbrushes is actually kind of funny.

I hear you, but what about the tiny tots? Do they even know what candy is? (I've never been a parent).

DH buys the candy for himself, not the kids  Last year we had 5 trick-or-treaters. He was munching on Halloween candy well into the new year.

Well, they definitely will know after their first Halloween! :p Fact is, if their parents are bringing them out, they know they will get a bunch of candy. Honestly I would put out everything you have, including the candy, no reason for people to think you are the "grinch of Halloween", and they might think it's nice that you have different choices than other people.

They actually love the toothbrushes!

We have some candy for the older kids, and when we give the little ones a choice between a toothbrush or a candy bar, 90% of them pick the toothbrush! Of course they are not your average toothbrushes..some are neon colors etc. They come back every year asking for their toothbrush. :D

I am very into healthy eating for my son and limit his candy/chocolate/sugary treats constantly...even today! Even with that being said though, we still give candy out at Halloween. It's not Halloween without it! :D

OMG! The little bags of Mott's apple slices are going like hot cakes! :eek:You would not believe how many kids just chose apples over M&Ms!! I'm actually running out of apple packs!

I think it's because we have about 75 apartments in the building and the kids get so much of the same stuff, they actually get excited to see something a bit different. I just heard one of the kids telling some other kids "they have apples!". I'm guessing the bright red packaging doesn't hurt. ;)

Those apple slices are such a great idea! I don't get very many kids, so I'm definitely going to try the apples next year. I usually have to buy Halloween candy that DH likes, so he can scarf up the leftovers...but next year it's definitely apple packs!!

If I was giving out treats this year I would be giving candy, it's one day a year so let them have a little fun. Living in an apartment complex I don't get very many treaters, so this year I decided not to pass any out.

Next year I will though :)

Halloween Treats

This year I did 2 things...mini playdohs for the little tots and candy for the older kids. Well, I had kids (mind you these were "older" kids around 9-13 years old) BEGGING me for playdoh, as I had that bowl separate from the candy. I had one girl run down our driveway screaming as loud as she could "she's giving out playdoh" and then a bunch of kids came running to my door. Never thought it would be so popular. I ran out of playdoh (40 containers) WELL before the candy! I got the idea from a radio station I was listening to the other day. Give it a try next year!

we took all the cousins trick or treating, about 10 kids. several of them got really excited about getting juice boxes. it's not much better, but it's a start.

I'm glad your apple treats went over well with the kids. I remember getting little packs of raisins when i was a kid.

Like the above posters, I have heard the mini paydough is a very popular treat these days and I also know a dentist that gives out toothbrushes.

I gave out stickers to my kids yoga class on Hallowe'en and they loved it.
