anyone convert your old VHS to DVD's?

I've got a stack of old Firm VHS tapes that I cannot bear to part with. I want to convert them to DVD's before they get too old and worn out.

Has anyone found a reliable,(and reasonable) way to do this?

I found a converting service in the phone book but they charge a dollar a minute!!! Yikes.

Hope someone can respond!

Danna,

I had this problem also. I just bought a DVD recorder and have transferred all of my old FIRMs to DVD and it is GREAT! The DVD recorder was more than I had wanted to spend, but I feel in the long run it will be worth it.

I hope this helps and good luck :)

This site is quite helpful on that sort of thing. I believe the easiest way is to use a digital camcorder to record off the vhs, then transfer to your pc that way.

You then need to use a DVD authoring program such as TMPGEnc DVD Author(you can download a trial copy of this software from this site: http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html )to convert the footage into DVD format.

The videohelp site has lots of tutorials and resources that will assist you.

I have never tried this method myself and can't therefore comment on the likely picture quality.

Have fun!
Josie :)

Edited to say: please be aware of possible breach of copyright laws if you make copies of your vhs tapes onto dvd!

My husband took a VHS tape of my young horse to work at the Discovery Channel and had one of the technicians dub it to a DVD. The color quality of the picture suffered the most (faded), but I am grateful to have a more permanent and durable record of the amazing little guy he was before he died.
