Any TRX users out there?

I am just about to finish up STS and am looking to try something new. I have been playing around with starting up kettlebells - with Lauren Brooks volume I dvd, rolling ropes (http://www.bosufitness.com/store/home.php?cat=103) - by the guy who invented the BOSU or TRX (http://www.fitnessanywhere.com/learn/?Screen=learn). I was wondering if anyone out there has an opinion on any of these workouts. And in particular does anyone out there use TRX and if so do you recommend any specific workout dvds - there seem to be several that I would like to try but really would like to hear what others who have used the dvds say about them.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Sarah,
I just posted a similar response over on the videofitness forums regarding experiences with the TRX DVDs, and I thought I'd share here as well.

I've been an avid TRX user for over a year now. I love using it, and my clients also really like their effectiveness and versatility (I'm a personal trainer and fitness coach as well). I think that their DVDs are high quality, chaptered and produced well, and I like the detailed booklet that comes with each one. The DVD quality and professionalism remind me alot of Cathe's products actually in terms of quality, versatility, and comprehensiveness. They don't have pre-mixes, but most DVD has instructions on using/setting up the TRX, a dedicated exercise library, and an incredible booklet that details each exercise and even contains a summary of the workout for you to take along when you want to train anywhere.

Anyway, I own the following TRX DVDs:
1. All Body Express - I think this is a very effective, total body circuit. I do find it very challenging. It does use a variety of exercises, which is excellent, but you will need to familiarize yourself with some of them. I advise spending some time reviewing the exercise library.
2. Train Like the Pros - I love this DVD and Todd Durkin. The 2 Durkin DVDs are my favorites. This workout clocks in at about 50 minutes. It is a bit more upper body and core focused than lower body. However, I do appreciate the core drills performed in this DVD.
3. Team Sports - This workout is more total body balanced than Train Like the Pros, and I love it. The drills are fantastic. It's fast paced and excellent for conditioning. I can say that this is my favorite DVD in my TRX library so far.
4. Ropes & Straps - I thought this DVD was a nice balance between the TRX and jump roping. I enjoyed both instructors. The pairing of TRX and jump rope is excellent and can be a proven Tabata workout if you are ever so inclined to do one on your own. I enjoyed this DVD very much.
5. Ropes & Straps 2 - I rate this workout as the most difficult in my library. I've tried it twice in the past 8 months, and it kicked my butt each time. I just found the exercises to be really difficult, and I've decided that I'm not quite ready for this one yet. It's advanced and a must keep for me :)
6. TRX Essentials: Strength - I used this as one of my introductory DVDs for technique. I've only used it a few times, and it was early on when I was first starting out with the TRX, but I found the instruction to be very good. I actually liked that they performed 2 rounds of each exercise for a longer workout (about 60 mins), which could easily be scaled back by doing only a single set of each exercise.
7. TRX Essentials: Flexiblity - I absolutely LOVE this DVD. I've been trying to integrate more stretching into my training regimen, and this DVD is perfect. I think that the TRX really helps in getting an effective stretch. I love it and use it often. I rank this DVD as a must have if you own a TRX. It really demonstrates the versatility of the TRX, and the stretches are innovative.
8. TRX Cardio Circuit - This one was along the lines of Ropes & Straps 2, and I consider it to be an advanced DVD. I'm not ready for it :), but I can't wait to build up the endurance and conditioning to handle it.
These are DVDs that I own but haven't tried yet:
1. Basic Training - I haven't tried this one yet, so I can't comment. This DVD replaced the All Body Express circuit that came with the v1 TRX.
2. TRX Force DVD - I've reviewed this program and it looks fantastic. It employs several advanced movements, which I love. I may give the program a shot this summer.
3. I also own several of the downloads, but haven't tried them yet. I'm looking forward to trying the Drew Brees & MMA workouts soon.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please send me an email. No matter what, you have made a wise decision by investing in the TRX. It's a staple in my library, and it's FUN!! My boyfriend has also started using it more, and he really enjoys it also (he's an ex semi-pro football player who really enjoys bodyweight training).

Good luck!

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you for your reply! Wow, it was so informative and helpful. You have really helped me decide to purchase the TRX. And you have also really helped me with what dvds to get to start with.

When you bought your system did you buy the pro or the train at home? I am just wondering because of what comes with the trx setup. I want to get the door attachment so that is why I am thinking of the home package, but there are fewer workouts that come with this setup.

I had been eyeing the ropes and straps 2 - good thing you told me how advanced it was. Maybe not the best one to start with, huh? I think I will get the stretching one along with one other workout to start. I am a bit concerned about the ropes part - I train in my living room and it has low ceilings- do you think I can do the rope workout inside?

Thanks again for all of your help! I think I will be emailing you soon about this. I have one last week of meso 3 and a recovery week and I am trying to decide what to do next...so I'll be ordering TRX in the next few days.

Hi Macbeanur,

I am so glad that the input helped! I am a trainer and I use kettlebells, ropes, & TRX on a daily basis with my clients and for my own training development. I think that you can't go wrong with any of it :) I don't have the rolling ropes, but I do have the manila ropes gone wild (art of strength). I love them all. I've been trained by Anthony DiLuglio as well; I've been working with kettlebells since 2005.

Anyway, given that you are just wrapping up an STS round (which I LOVED!! - always love Cathe :) ), I think the TRX would be a good next move for you.

The packages have changed since I started with the TRX, and I own several units. Of the current packages, I think that you'd be better served by getting the home package bundle, especially if you need a door anchor. I bought the training pro pack recently because I thought I was going to get 3 DVDs. You actually only get 1 physical DVD (the Basic Training DVD)(which is also in the home bundle). The 2 bonus workouts are not on DVD at all; they are cut-outs that you can take with you. I've since transcribed those workouts on my computer, and I'd be happy to share them with you.

As for Ropes & Straps 2, it's definitely on my advanced workouts list. However, I think that Ropes & Straps 1 is definitely reasonable. Don't get me wrong, it's still pretty challenging, but I think the sequencing and exercises are more suitable to novice & intermediate users. If you don't have a jump rope or can't jump inside due to space constraints, you can probably jump rope outside. Alternatively, have you ever tried the cardio jump handles? I actually use them when I am working with multiple people in my garage gym, and they work well. I just found a pair today at Ross for $9.99, which is a steal; they retail for $19.99. I was bought a pair for one of my clients as an appreciation gift :D.

BTW - I am an affialiate for TRX, and I know of a few sales that will be announced to the public soon, so you are wise to hold off on purchasing for a few days :). I'll email you privately to discuss. I'm also an affiliate for art of strength. I own almost every art of strength product, so let me know if you have any questions on those or getting started with kettlebells in general.

Anyway, I could clearly go on and on, so I'll end it here. I'll PM you and please let me know if there are any questions that you might have. Fitness is my passion :)

ETA - I also don't want my comments to be considered a commercial posting in any way. I've been a happy Cathe customer and forum member for years, and I've been a fitness instructor for 12 years. I think this discussion is okay since it's in the open discussion forum.

all the best,
