any safe and effective fat loss supplements

Sigh,I have been struggling with the hard lard 10 pounds I would love to shed, and I saw a friend who had lost over 30 pounds through using Xenacal (sp?) from a prescription. She looks wonderful and I felt like a fat slob next to her. I feel as if I need a push to get this off but my doctor would never recommend that drug, as she thinks I don't need to lose any weight and look fine. Any OTC supplements that anyone would recommend and that are safe/ I bought a bottle of Hydroxycut but upon looking at the amount of caffeine and knowing how I already have sleep issues, I am inclined to take it back to the store.
thanks. :)

If there were I think we'd all be selling the stuff!
First of all Whats "safe" for 1 body may not be "safe" for someone else.... Secondly: Fat cannot magically be made to disappear... it must be burned and calories in cannot consistently be higher than calories out.
As someone who use to try it all I can tell you my metabolism took 2 years to get straightened out .... I will never go that route again! PLUS if you did find a magic pill THEY ARE EXPENSIVE! Once you stop taking a magic pill whatever it was doing for ceases to be done and you end up w/ the same thing... I think it becomes an addiction like smoking.... the pills make you think that they are the answer to all your prayers.... NOT TRUE they actually cause more wt/metabolism issues (or worse) down the road.
So in a nut shell - RE-READ SHELLEYS SHORT & ACCURATE POST!:+ ;-)

Take it back. I wouldn't take those kind of supplements. Some people are fast to say all supplements are bad, but there are good nutritional programs out there. I daily encourage people with hope, for better health and a future. The products are safe and effective. We have the top doctors on our Scientific and Medical Advisory Board. One example is Carl Keen PhD. he is the Chair and Professor of the department of Nutrition at UC Davis. Which happens to be the bigggest lab in the United States. He is in the top 1% of his feild in the whole world. I have a lot of respect for this man along with all the other doctors on our Sci-Med Board. In fact I went to a conference this weekend and met him personally. Very impressive. Back to the supplements, you can't get all the nutrition your body needs from our food today. Everyyone needs to take a vitamin or supplement of some kind to fill in the nutrional gaps. And the stuff you can buy in the store doesn't cuit it. Their made with cheep ingredients that have receptors on them making it impossible to abosorb the nutrients that it suposely has. And vitamins and supplements aren't regulated. AdvoCare is just the opposite, infact people notice a difference just taking CorePlex the multi vitamin. Some people say it is too expensive, but it's all aboout how you value your life. AdvoCare helped me lose that last 15 lbs. I couldn't get rid of it on my own. I tried for 3.5 years, and that was doing Cathes DVD's along with The Firm 6 days a week. Exercise and propper nutrition together will get you were you want to go.
Good Luck,
Melissa

As someone who tried OTC fat burning and appetite suppressants, I can honestly say they don't work! They may temporarily help you lose a few lbs., but once you stop taking them the weight comes back and then some. I really do think they screw your metabolism up. You're much better off doing things the old-fashioned way, hard work and clean eating.

I agree that clean eating and hard work are the key. (You notice that the only person so far who is pushing supplements is someone who sells them).

There are many ways to lose weight, including using weight-loss supplements, but not all of them are sustainable or healthy (you can also lose weight by getting a wasting disease or having a limb amputated!).

Some healthy substitutions in your diet can help with those last 10 pounds. If you drink any sodas, replace them with water. Replace fruit juices with whole fruits. Add more raw fruits and veggies to your meals. Avoid packaged/processed foods, especially any with high fructose corn syrup/sweetener or hydrogenated/partially-hydrogenated oils in. Have a couple of cups of green tea per day (not only does it have beneficial antioxidants, studies have shown that it can help with weight loss).

If you don't already do so, add a cardio interval workout (like the Imaxes) to your routine once or twice a week (on non-consecutive days).

I agree with the diet and exercise, and forget the miracle pills. I just can't buy that "you can't get the proper nutrients with food today" stuff. Just chose the right foods.

I think depending on supplements and vitamins to lose weight or "be healthy" can defeat the purpose. I have a friend who eats horribly...fast food (I'm sorry, this stuff shouldn't even be called food), those frozen throw some meat in casserole starters, hamburger helper...but she thinks she's fine because she takes 3 or 4 different vitamins a day. I know that's an extreme case, but it kinda goes with that whole "a pill can cure anything" mentality.

Examining your diet, not just for calories and fat, but for real, honest-to-god FOOD, is a big step, and one that can be really hard for a lot of us. We're so used to being marketed and fed packaged, high-sodium, high-fat, low-nutrient STUFF. I think that if you can't pronounce most of the ingredients in the food that you're buying (or it just doesn't seem to belong---see my bread comment below), put it back on the shelf and find something that has fewer ingredients--ones that you recognize as simple food and that you can pronounce.

Not long ago, someone had a post on this site about whole wheat bread. I recommended a brand that I had just discovered that had "whole wheat" as the first ingredient and was only 40 calories a slice. After I posted, I looked up the ingredients again...and there were a lot of them (How could that be? When I made bread at home, there were usually no more than four or five ingredients.) (I'm usually good at reading the labels before buying, but not this time). When I looked further down on the ingredients, I was appalled...fish oil?? Does fish oil really belong in bread???

Anyway, that's my rant!

I only know of one natural supplement that has several studies behin d it, that show it is supposed to help maintain a healthy weight and bodyfat level, Tonalin CLA. It is natural substance found in certain foods that most people eliminate, or reduce when dieting. I first heard about it when I was following the Body for Life program several years ago. I buy mine at GNC, but they have it at most grocery stores. I did research, read several articles on it, it is safe and effective. It is not a stimulant, does not have any other ingredients in it except CLA. It really does seem to help. I have been in maintainence mode for several years. My weight does not flucuate over 3 to 4 lbs, which is normal.

I agree 245%!!

Sometimes, when I go to the grocery store, I have a feeling like I'm on some kind of Bizarro planet, because the most prominent "foods" I first see are complete 'non-foods,' like cookies, candy, overly-processed baked foods, 'stuff' in boxes that you can't even recognize.

As for supplements: studies have shown that isolated and/or synthetic vitamins can actually be harmful. For example, many authorities are now recommending that one never take Vitamin A in supplement form. And while the beta carotene, and other carotenoids found in whole foods, has been linked with a reduced risk of certain types of cancers, a study on the effectiveness of beta carotene supplements was cut short because it was found that the isolated supplements actually were increasing risk of disease in the participant.

Bottom line: get your nutrients from food (and some well-chosen whole-food supplements, like, for example, vitamin C that is from powdered acerola cherry and not an isolated and/or synthetic version).

First, I think it's important to recognize that 10 pounds does not a "fat slob" make. And while your friend may have lost that weight quickly, what does she look like undressed? It is likely that she looks flabby, with no muscle tone. The key is in hard work and a clean diet. That's the only way to consistently maintain a healthy and toned body. You want to mix up cardio and weights, and watch what goes into your mouth.

I know no one ever wants to hear that, but it's the truth.

Good luck!
Marie

I did hear of apple cider viniger helping bind fat. It pretty cheap and good for you too. Braags, I belive is the natural kind. Just an idea.

I found it interesting to read the comments on supplements. That was my opinion for years as well. When AdvoCare crossed my path I was ready to give up. I worked out everyday but Monday, and my diet wasn't bad. It took a lot for me to buy into a vitamin company. But you know it worked. In about two and a half weeks my fifteen pounds were gone, and I never felt better. I still to this day feel awsome. I have more energy than ever before, and my workouts are unbelievable. My cardio and endurance has doubled. My lungs are in great shape. I was born with asthma, and there were many times in my life I thought I would never see the next day. I was constantly in and out of the hospital while growing up. Even though I worked out all those years I would have to use my inhaler, I don't have to anymore. All I have ever wanted to do is help people that is why I work in the medical field. You know I had no intentions of selling vitamins to anyone, but people came to me. They came to me, because of what they saw with their own eyes. At that point all I could do is help. Someone helped me, now I help others. I have had a positive impact on so many lives in such a short period of time. For example my mom has had high BP and cholesterol for 16 years. She was on medication for this and wasn't successfuly keeping it down in range. I put her on product, and within 3 months it was normal. Her DR asked her what in the heck she did, and she told him 'AdcvoCare'. She no longer takes those prescriptions, she doesn't need them. I have a friend at work who has uncontrolable diabetes, he has to wear an insulin pump. Now when diabetics eat fatty meals later their surgar levels rise, do to breakdown of fats. I put him on Fibotrim. He no longer has this problem. Also when he plays hockey he would be so sore the next day, because diebetics don't heal well. He drinks a postrecovery shake when he plays hockey, and now he is not nearly as sore as he used to be. Now AdvoCare doesn't make medical claims, but this is all true facts. I've helped people with all kinds of issues like IBS, weightloss, and the biggest is energy. So ya, supplements aren't for everyone, but they do help a lot of people. And like I said I was once on your side of the fence until I saw what the propper nutrition can do for people.

I personally feel very uncomfortable (and skeptical) about someone posting about products they are selling.

But I'm always skeptical when someone's recommendations just happen to correspond with their own profit.

You don't know me personally, so ya I can see why you feel this way. I just like to help people. I post info about AdvoCare, because it would be morally wrong not too. The products are safe and they do work. I have changed the lives of so many people with AdvoCare. I can't help but to give people the option to check it out. Most people don't know about AdvoCare. You can't buy the products in stores you have to buy them from a member. I list my web site so people can check it out. They don't have to buy from me. They can find a member in their area if they want. I just can't read these posts, and not put the information out there. That's how awsome these products are. When you purchase products you also get a wellness choach along with it. We as members of AdvoCare always keep in touch with our customers. We always take the time to talk about goals and what products would be best. Then when on product, we check to make sure the products are taken properly and that he/she is getting the results they want. It is a work program and we work as a team to accomplish goals what ever they may be.

I, too, would be very leery of anyone posting a suggestion that will bring personal gain.

I agree proper nutrition and exerice are the key. The last two years I gained a lot of weight.I howerver, don't look for a miracal in a pill. I'm still lerning how to read labels in grocery stores. My son also was constanly in and out of hospitals and used an inaler. Many adults grow out of asthma...( not always!! I have cleaned up my diet and have more energy than ever, but the natural way!! Mellisa, like you said suppliments aren't for everyone. The only miracle pill I need right now is Cathe pill (of to my 2 week Nov. rotation).Mabey I'll take two ????????

I think of supplements as being the equivalent of snake oil.

They do not work!

My rationale is if all these "wonder pills" melted fat, then a lot more people would not be obese.

I think clean eating (most of the time -- I do cheat) and working out regularly are key to effective weight loss and maintenance.

Yeah, Marie!

You are so right.

I had a "friend" who began to lose a ton of weight very quickly.

Every week when we had out now defunct "girls night out" we would go shopping.

All I heard was, "I am down to a size 7, then a 5, then a 3" and so on.

Well, she used me as her personal lackey as she began the search for "the perfect bra" which for her standards did not exist.

Anyway, I was apalled when I saw her body in the dressing room as I carried bra after bra to her.

She was a flabby mess -- her flesh looked like curdled milk.

She may have been a size 3, but if that is what a size 3 looks like on her 5'6" body, then I will be happy with my size 6.

At least I am toned!
