Any Pilonidal Cyst suffers?

Cathlete
I was wondering if there are any Pilonidal Cyst suffers among us.
If there are, how do you cope with a flare up? Do you still workout?
Do you modify?

I have been suffering from lower back pain and coccyx pain for about 6 months. After xrays and a visit to an Orthopedic, I was diagnosed with a small Pilonidal cyst.

Hi Elaine. I've had pilonidal cysts. I didn't know I had them until a couple of them ruptured back when I was in middle school. (Sorry if TMI!) I had them surgically removed at that time. I still suffer from pain around my tailbone, though, and suspect I may have one (or a few) well below the skin surface. It doesn't cause me any problems as far as working out - I don't have to modify anything. But sitting in hard chairs gets really uncomfortable really fast. It you're in quite a bit of pain, you may want to consider surgical removal of the cyst. Other than that, I'm not sure what modifications you could do to your workouts - I guess just don't do any moves that cause you pain. Sorry, I probably wasn't much help. But I wanted you to know you're not alone. :)

Elaine, the surgery is really no big deal! It was an outpatient procedure for me, and this was 15 years ago. I had a lot of pain right after surgery, but that was because they didn't dope me up with enough painkillers. LOL! I recovered very quickly, although I walked like a duck for a couple days afterward. ;)

Emily,

Thank you for the reply. I have difficulty with soft chairs. The area is inflamed. Any type of movement where I have to go from lying down to sitting is painful. I see the orthopedic in three weeks to see if I am any better. If not then I will be seeing a general surgeon. Any surgery is frightful to me. I haven't had much luck with surgeries in the past.

Life is so unpredictable.

I had one 25 years ago. I had day surgery to remove it (dr found I had 2 cysts instead of 1) They left the area open to heal (sorry if gross) But I healed fine. My doctor told me to sit in hot water with epsom salts to help before the surgery. This was my first surgery so I was terrified but everything went well. I'm sure the surgical techniques have changed in 25 years though.

Good Luck!

Rugrat,
Thanks for the reply. My Dr. decided to treat with antibiotic to get the inflamation down. But if the pain persist my next step would be to remove the cyst.
I'm just thrilled to be able to do low impact step with out any shooting pain.

I am so happy Cathe came out with her new DVD. It was just what I needed to start back with.

Elaine:)

Oh my gosh! I feel like in a very stange way I have found a new sisterhood among you all!!

Never in all my life have I met anyone who even knew what one of these things were, yet here you all are....my cyst sistahs!

When I was very young, about 5 years old, I kept having this pain in my tailbone. I remember complaining to my mom about it but she just ignored it. One time I remember going to sit in a chair with metal arms and bumping my rear on the metal bar and screaming out in pain. All I knew after that was that I ended up in the hospital and had surgury, and was in ICU. To me all that meant was that I couldn't play with any of the other kids in the hospital because I was in isolation. I do remember my grandpa visiting and bringing me a view master, which I loved:)

Anyway, the details were always really foggy to me until recently. I asked my mom just what was up with all that. I knew the name of it and everything, but I didn't know how she ever figured out it was so serious. I guess it got horribly infected and I went into a very high fever and being sick. That was when she finally paid attention and took me to the doctor. He immediately hospitalized me and I went for surgury.

Sorry to ramble, but like I said, I have never in my life heard anyone else mention this thing. My other point is a caution to consider having it taken care of because I know the infection was very serious.

Lastly, and this is gross, so stop here if you have weak stomachs anyone...I was told that they come from all the left over "stuff" in utero. Meaning that when you are forming as a baby there are left over cells that will migrate to this area and this can be the basis of the cyst. They have found hair, even teeth (unformed kind of teeth) and other nasty sounding stuff inside them. Eeewwwwww.... I have no idea if that is true, but that is what I was told.

I want to add that the seriousness could have also had something to do with the era. This was, gulp, 34 years ago. I was also about 5 years old, and it was infected. This may account for the intensive care ward and being in the hospital a week. Some of the other replies here sound much more simple in terms of procedure, so I don't want to sound any alarms.

I had mine removed in 1979 or so. The surgery went fine. It is probably even easier now.

My mom and my uncle had them, but they never had theirs removed, and they flared up again and again all their lives.
