Any luck microwaving Steel Cut Oats?

I just bought a box of organic Steel cut oats and followed the directions for the microwave method. What a mess. I tried making it in a taller narrow container (I used a microwavable drinking glass) but the cereal still bubbles up and pours out all over the place.

Do you microwave yours? Any tips you can share would be appreciated.

I microwaved it for less then four min because of the mess. It tastes hard and under cooked.

I look forward to ur responses. Thanks

Carmen.

Yep, and no probs, but they will come out a little chewier than the stove top. I think the canister says to use a 2 cup microwave safe bowl, but that just makes a huge mess. I use a 12 cup plastice microwavable bowl, and that keeps it all in. You can prob even try a 4 cup pyrex measuring cup/pitcher.

Someone recommended soaking the oats in water over night.
I haven't tried it because I use a crock pot. But it makes sense. It softens it and then you heat it. :)

I eat oat bran, and it looks just like the steel cut oats - I'm not sure what the difference is, but like Nan said, use a bigger bowl or what I do is try to use a bigger bowl than what I need and stand guard at the microwave. If you keep watch, you can quickly open the door, which immediately stops the oats from overflowing, give them a quick stir, and start again until they are done. The oat bran cooks in about 3 minutes - the first 2 go fine - then I stir and for the last 1 min, I have to keep opening and stirring.

I use my rice cooker and it's great, but a friend of mine who feels that rice cookers are a waste of electricity does something like boiling them at night and then letting them sit overnight and in the morning she just re-heats and they're great.

We soak our steel cut oats. Equal parts oats and liquid (DH likes unsweetened almond milk, I like water). He eats it cold.

When I make mine, I do it at night. I put 3 or so cups of water in a pot, bring the water to a boil, throw the oats in and stir them around, take it off the heat and put the lid on. When I come down in the morning, they're perfect. I divide them up into containers and have about four one cup servings. Then I just stick 'em in the microwave for a minute to heat them up.

This is a great idea. Its exactly with I was looking for. I try to prepare as much of my food ahead of time. I will try this. Thank you so much for the great advice everyone.

I got rid of my microwave 2 years ago, but oatmeal is notorious for bubbling over.

For quick morning prep, instead of microwaving, you could heat some water the night before, let the oatmeal soak in it over night, then heat briefly (5 minutes or so?) until the right consistency.

What she said (which, if I'd read the whole thread before posting, I would have posted originally!)

Yup me too. Then I put them in 1 cup portions in ziplock bags and freeze them. I make a large quantity. Then every morning I just pop one in the microwave for 3 minutes, stir and them nuke it again for 1 minute.

I don't heat them at all the night before and still get great results. I just pour water on them from the tap. DH pours cold almond milk on them and we put them back in the fridge without any heating. They turn out fine. We use equal parts liquid and oats.

I was wondering where you buy the almond milk and what brand? Thanks!:)

Same here too, I don't cook my oats anymore. I just pour milk and add some choc tasting protein shake in and leave it overnight in the fridge and eat it the next morning. Yummy.

Another great timesaving idea. Thank you I will try it.

You can buy almond milk at health food stores (the kind that sell food as well as supplements), places like Whole Foods, or even some drug stores.

Two brands and Pacific and a new Almond Dream (by the folks who make Rice Dream).

You can also make your own. Soak raw almonds overnight, then drain (this reduces the bitter element in the skins and also makes the nuts more digestible). Put in a blender with 3x the amount of water and blend until liquid. Add more water as needed. Strain. (you can use the almond pulp in baking). Add sweetener and a pinch of salt if wanted. Keeps for up to 5 days (maybe longer, but best the fresher it is).

Or you could buy something like this http://www.tribestlife.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=7&idproduct=67 which makes not only any kind of nut milk, but soymilk as well (it cooks the soymilk, but makes raw nut milks).

I usually buy Pacific brand. They also have Oat milk - which is also very good with oats but higher in calories.

I've made my own before too like Kathryn described. I added dates for sweetening. It was very good but you have to buy a lot of almonds and then you have to deal with the pulp, etc. So I find it more convenient to buy the pre-made milk and just accept the extra ingredients they put in it like Carageenan and Guar Gum.

I can find it at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.
