Any "Foodies" out there?

I am new to the board and have seen messages for "clean eating" and I know this would not work for me or my spouse--simply too spartan. I enjoy cooking and getting ideas from Food Network (I like Rachel Ray--quick, easy, tasty). I also like trying ethnic foods. Being married to a cajun means good gumbo and jambalaya. If I'm going to sweat through IMAX 3 I want my "just desserts!" }(

I'm with you. I love to eat and try new recipes, restaurants and foods. So does DH. He's not cajun (lucky you!) but he was a chef in a former life and cooks a mean Japanese meal :D

Hey, I'm a foodie too, but just because you love food doesn't mean you can't eat clean. My SO is a chef and prepares all our dishes with fresh ingredients and lots of spice.:)

Man oh Man I am here too. I love ALL food. I stopped eating at bedtime and quit drinking soda I'm down 10 pounds and 1 jean size thanks to Cathe I am loving it & I am a Dairy Queenaholic. I treat myself once (or twice) a week.

Hey Shelley!

I agree, and do mostly eat healthy, awesome recipes, like the red lentil and brown rice patties with cilantro sauce I made the other night :D

For me, I have tried to do the super clean eating thing and just have no interest at this point in my life. It's not that the food can't be good, but that IMO dealing with it is tedious. And, with my past food issues, I think it's not good to get fixated on such a strict way of eating.

I don't do bland food. I can't sentence myself to a lifetime of egg whites and oatmeal. IMO, you can eat very cleanly without having to sacrifice taste:)

The best clean eating thing I've ever heard and I think about it still is to try and eat like Betty Rubble. If it didn't exist when the Flinstones were around, it's probably not clean...

BUT, FOOD IS LOVELY no matter how you look at it!! }( I enjoy it any way it comes, so long as I don't see the machine that made it in my head when I'm about to eat it. :9

"Clean eating" doesn't mean spartan!

I won't speak for anyone else, but enjoy the foods and flavors of whole foods, and in fact no longer like the taste of food with too much fat or sweetness.

It's not like we're a bunch of monks depriving ourselves! I feel no sense of deprivation at all.

I LOVE to cook and eat. Eating clean is so much more than dry chicken and vegetables. If the foods you eat come mostly from the perimeter of the store (produce section, dairy case, etc) you're 90% there. Just cut back on added fats and oils (a tablespoon or two of olive oil in a dish for 4 people is plenty), switch out the high fat meats for lean meats (skinless chicken breasts, turkey, fish), try some new whole grains (I can't get my family to eat brown rice but they sure do love millet and quinoa), add more veggies and control your portions. Add flavor with herbs and spices and add moisture with broth or wine instead of oil and butter. With a bit of experimentation, you can eat super clean without sacrificing taste at all.

Well, I guess I'm just curious if there are people who eat without subscribing to any sort of program other than common sense and moderation. Maybe clean works for many of you but from what I have seen of people's "menus" I simply could not stick to it or maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean by "clean." I don't have a chef on hand to whip things up and sometimes there is simply not the time, nor the effort, available to doctor "clean" food up so that is palatable to my tastes. I enjoy tea with cream and sugar on a daily basis and I don't let a piece of chessecake pass me by. I am a sucker for Rhode Island littlenecks with butter and a good fish fry in the summertime. And anytime I visit So. Florida I stop at Maggie Moos for a scoop of cake batter ice cream. I couldn't imagine skipping out on those little pleasures. :9

I'm doing weight watchers right now and that's all about portion control. It's working pretty well for me because I can have a treat every now and then and I'm fine as long as I'm within my points. Eating clean is just something to move towards gradually. Good heavens don't give up those little pleasures! Just keep your portions in check and don't have major indulgences on a daily basis.

Oh...yes...I'm definitely an "all foods in moderation" kind of a girl and I love to cook. I have a massive cookbook collection and read them the way other people read novels.

TOTALLY agreeing with Shelley here, and will go her one further. I don't think you can eat clean unless you ARE a foodie. Anything you cook at home in your own kitchen is usually "clean" in the sense that I've heard Cathe use the term. If you love to cook, and love lots of different foods you are in a much better position to avoid the processed stuff. And that's what clean eating is all about.

Major foodie here! I am always trying new recipes from the Food Network or Bon Appetit.

My DH is a Food and Beverage Mgr for a major Hotel chain, so we have alot of fun experimenting with all kinds of cuisine!

I try to eat healthy but I have a family to feed as well. By saying that I don't mean they eat fried foods and TV dinners, but they enjoy their pastas, meats, and desserts. BTW, my family is not overweight, either....

What can I say? I love food!!!

There's the rub: to you, they are pleasures, to some of us, they might not be.

Now, give me a fresh, ripe mango, or a perfectly ripe avocado, spread on a slice of whole grain sprouted bread.and I'm in heaven!

And I don't subscribe to any particular "diet." I'm a vegan for ethical reasons, and prefer whole foods with a large percentage of raw foods, because I feel that is the healthiest, AND tastiest way for ME to eat.

It's also a matter of balance, and it's what you do MOST of the time (consistently) that determines your state of health and fitness, so there's room for indulgences in everyone's way of eating (I just had a "Pecan Joy"--a vegan version of "Almond Joy" --last night, and enjoyed every minute of it!)

I agree!
Unless you are lucky enough to live in a town that has a whole foods restaurant or two, the best 'clean" (a term which I personally hate, by the way!) food is the stuff you make yourself.

Well, I can't call myself a foodie because I really don't like to cook. However, I do cook because I believe it's much healthier. Besides, I grew up on homecooked meals and just don't enjoy the taste of the prepackaged stuff.

Just a reminder to those who might not be familiar with clean eating. Clean eating means that you eat food in its most natural state. Whole fresh sweet potatoes as opposed to the candied version with marshmallows on top, for example. Natural brown rice instead of the polished stuff with the hull (and most of the nutrients) removed.

I think a major emphasis on this forum is to avoid a lot of the additives, preservatives, etc. that can be found in prepared foods, since some of these items are really sounding dangerous to our health. And of course avoiding high fat stuff.

All that said.... I like my fats too! Cheese and dairy... yum! I'm trying to cut back, but I don't think I'll ever totally cut them out. But then, I am also currently exploring some vegan options to see how things feel.
