Any Dr. Baumann DSPWs out there?

Cathlete
Today is my day to buy the recommended products from Dr. Baumann's book for my difficult skin type: DSPW. I'll start with the drugstore stuff and see if it works, and if not, I'll see a dermatologist.

I'm planning to purchase:

1. Skineffects Dr. Jeffrey Dover Advanced Brightening Complex
2. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Visibly Even Daily SPF 15 moisturizer (for day use)
3. Atopalm MLE Face Cream (for night use)

I already have Neutrogena Visibly Firm Eye Cream, which I really like.

My primary goal is to lighten my brown spots. I realize it's going to take many weeks to see any results, so I plan to be patient.

If there are any other DSPWs out there, I'll report back in a few weeks.

Anyone else trying a Baumann regimen?

I'm using the Neutrogena Visibly Even Daily SPF 15 Loisturizer and I've been doing so for quite a time - over two months, and I can't say I've seen much improvement/change in my skin. I'm still the freckly redhead I've always been.

I don't know who Dr. Baumann is or what a DSPW is, but your mention of Neutrogena caught my eye. I hope you have better luck with it than I did! :) I'm trying to use the rest the tube up so I can finally pitch it.

Good Luck on your skin-care regimen! :D

Susan,
There have been several posts in this forum in the last few months regarding a book called "The Skin Type Solution" by Dr. Leslie Baumann, a dermatologist. The book contains a question and answer section which allows you to identify your skin type among many different types. Then the book recommends products, including those that are affordable and carried by most drugstores.

DSPW stands for Dry, Sensitive, Pigmented, Wrinkled (which is pretty much the worst type you can have). The primary purpose of the Neutrogena Visibly Even for my skin care regimen is to provide a moisturizing high SPF cream without fragrance, I think. It's not the product that is intended to reduce the appearance of dark spots.

Having said all of that, have you tried wearing the Neutrogena under make-up? I have Neutrogena Visibly Firm SPF 20 lotion and it's awful. It simply cannot be worn with make-up because it prevents the make-up from going on smoothly. This is my main concern with the Visibly Even. Have you tried it with make-up? Thanks for your help!

Hi Nancy,

I'm actually an OSNW, but I'm bordering a bit on the Pigmented, so the last few weeks I've been trying the Skineffects Advanced Brightening Complex, which seems to be giving me good results! I mix a little of it into my prescription retinol cream at night, and then spread it all over my face and under my eyes.

I've also been using the Skineffects eye cream in the morning and at night. It's supposed to lighten undereye circles, but mine still seem to be pretty dark and the eye cream ends up burning my eyes a bit. I don't recommend it. I'll have to try the Neutrogena one you've been using! Is it good for dark circles?

Keep us posted on how you like everything! :)

Hi Susan,

Leslie Baumann is the author of the book _The Skin Type Solution_, which is a wonderful book that details what products work best for various skin types. A few of us have been using her recommended products, and getting great results!

ETA: Sorry for the repeat about who Dr. Baumann is! Our posts must have crossed in cyber-space, Nancy!

Thanks for posting, Leanne!

Regarding your question: No, the Neutrogena Visibly Firm eye cream doesn't reduce dark circles. I'm not sure if it's supposed to. What I like about it is I used to wake up in the morning with one eyelid saggy and the other smooth. Now both my eyelids are completely unwrinkled and always smooth. So, I think it's better for wrinkled eyes than for circles. I would try something else for dark circles.

Thanks, Nancy, for the heads-up about the Neut. eye cream. I actually ordered a new concealer this week called The Balm that got rave reviews on Makeup Alley, so I'm hoping that it will cover up those circles, but not sink into the dry creases that keep getting deeper and deeper!

Have you also checked out the forums for Dr. Baumann? They're located at http://www.skintypesolutions.com/forum/. They're not as much fun as Cathe's forum, but you might get some good advice there for your DSPW skin! :)

Hi all:

I am DRPW and got all the recommended products from the book.. I have the Laroche Posay Retinol 60, which if I use it for 3 days in a row, my face starts to peel, and sting when I put on any of the eye cream ( Larouch Posay Eyes). I am not sure if the dark spot lightener is working yet.

Leanne: I like your idea of mixing some of the night cream in with the Retin A.. does this allow you to use it more often without negative effects?

Nancy: I bought the Avon Anew day cream with sunscreen, but I found that I like the Aveno drug store recommendation better.. it was cheaper too!

I also found that the recommendations in the first hard cover book ) got at the library) are different than the paper back I bought.

Thanks for the info Nancy! You can tell how much I've been paying attention - heehee!

I haven't been wearing foundation at all lately because I've been using Revlon's Vital Radiance instead of traditional make-up.

My morning routine might make you raise an eyebrow:

I don't wash my face in the morning. I rinse it with water, pat it dry and put on whatever moisturizer is handy. Lately it's been the Neutrogena, which I agree, is not that great, but I didn't feel like wasting the money, so I use it anyway.

I then put on a wee bit of the Revlon Vital Radiance, which apparently is not being made anymore, but you can still find it here and there on the internet. It adds a bit of color and 25 SPF. Then I put on a bit of Physicians' Formula Face powder and then do the rest of my make up as usual.

I do use a Neutrogena Eye product too, although I'm not sure what it's suppose to do.

Once a week I use the Oil of Olay dermabrasion kit, if I remember. Oil of Olay seems to be my label of choice these days, mostly because of coupons in the Sunday paper.

I am devoted to sunscreen though, since I spend so much time outside with the horses. On very cold days, I will put on a layer of Eucerin skin cream, the thick heavy stuff, in addition to sunscreen, to protect myself from the wind.

At night it all gets washed off with Ponds cold cream. A little Oil of Olay night cream and that's that!

The one product that I wish I could splurge on more often is the DHC Velvet Skin Coat. It's just to much $$$, though.

TMI, I know!

Best-

Susan L.G.

Susan, I should send you my Olay dermabrasion products. I bought them, used them once, then bought the Baumann book which told me never to use a dermabrasion product.

You might want to get the Baumann book. It's out in paperback and costs about $12.00. The website updates the book as products change.

Hi all,

Deb -- Yes the book recommended mixing an antioxidant or serum in with the Retin A so it wouldn't be as harsh on sensitive skin. Surprisingly, I still get excellent results, so the added serum doesn't seem to condense the retinol too much. For the past year, I was using a L'Oreal serum with the retinol, but now I've switched to the Skin Effects lightener product, and the retinol is still working well. (For years, I had been using Avon's Anew line, but my wrinkles were getting worse. After buying the book, I realized that I need to stay away from AHA products and use retinols instead, and it's made a tremendous difference in my wrinkles!)

It's funny that Deb also mentioned that the products are different in the paperback. I bought the hardback when it first came out, and then recently purchased the paperback since it was only $10 on Amazon and since Dr. Baumann had said that she added new products. Well, the paperback has new products -- but I was completely surprised to see that it is actually much SHORTER than the original hardback! If you can pick up the hardback version or find it at a library, I'd recommend doing so. She gives much more information in the original hardback version about each skin type.

The hard part is that I tend to be a product junkie, and I love to try new products. It's been hard being consistent, but I've been seeing great results!

Hi Deb,

Have you been using the Laroche Posay Retinol 60 for a long time? You might want to start by not using it three days in a row, but rather every other night. In fact, my SIL said that when she first started using retinol, she could only use it once a week since it made her face peel so badly. Eventually she worked up to every three days, but that's still as frequently as she can use it -- otherwise she ends up with peeling skin right away!

Nancy -

It sounds like it would be a good investment of $12. I am fortunate to have inherited good skin from my mother's side and I tend to ignore it. Ther is so much info available and so much of it conflicting that I wouldn't even know where to begin..

Who knows what to do when you might be missing out on some better routine and/or product line?

Never heard of this book. I have been a Principal Secret user for 13years. I have changed products only as she has added new products. Th only outside treatment I do at a dermos office is a salacylic peel every 3 months. TxSystems-Affirm by Doak Dermotologics. It is the most affordable sun damage treatment I have tried and it really works. I am almost 44 and people always think I am late 20's early 30's. I have even been thought to be my 20 year olds girlfriend or wife. Helps with wrinkles as well. I am always interested in make-up and skincare. What I do to look younger is the above and Cathe.

I know, Susan. With all the products out there, and more coming out everyday, it's easy to miss something.
