Any dentists out there?

I had my teeth bonded (similar to veneers but not quite the same) a little more than 5 years ago. After that amount of time they've started to dull. I know the teeth whitening products available (white strips, bleaching trays, etc.) don't work on bonding or veneers.

So my question is, other than actually having the bonding grinded off & replaced, is there any other way to whiten them?

And my advice is, don't get veneers or bonding unless you have to (it was highly recommended to me b/c my gums were receding & my teeth are very sensitive, but I'm not happy w/the results & had I known then what I know now I'd have looked for a better solution).

Laura,

If you haven't had veneers, why do you say don't get veneers unless you have to.

I had bonding done approximately 20 years ago. Bonding degrades over time and mine was doing exactly that. Five years ago I had veneers put on six of my top front teeth and have been very happy with them. So, I would agree with the bonding. If I had it to do over again, I'd go straight to the veneers :)

Because according to my dentist it's the same thing, it's just applied differently.

Hmmm. My dentist told me that my veneers were made out of a sliver of porcelin, just like a crown, whereas the composite material was made out of a different synthetic material.

I was not guaranteed the veneers would last forever but that they should last for a much longer time than the composite material. I figured if the composite lasted me 15 years, the veneers was a good way to go.

It will be interesting to learn if there are other options.

In doing some internet research, I found out there are two kinds of veneer material as well. Porcelain and another. I've attached the website if you're interested. I never thought to research it when I had mine done because I went to the same dentist as a friend who was very pleased with hers. Mine are made of the porcelain.

Well, I think part of the problem was I had it done on 9/11 & I just know the dentist was distracted. I mean, I'm sitting in this dentist chair watching the WTC fall down & I kept saying let's reschedule this, I just don't think you can give it your full attention & she kept saying don't worry, everything's fine.

So I had one that kept popping off & I had to keep going back, & after the 5th time I just gave up. Which at this point doesn't matter b/c they're all the same color again anyway. Also I can kind of feel some ragged edges around my gum line which has really bothered me.

D*mn that Dunkin Donuts! If it wasn't for their coffee..........x(
