Any bikers or spinners here?

I just bought a exercise bike and there is a setting on it that tracks how many miles I've pedaled. I was wondering do you all shoot for a certain number of miles, or do you go time wise, and if I increase the resistance is that comparable to weight training since it recruits the muscle much harder than on the regular setting. (And I lose my breath much faster not to mention the burning sensation in my quads)

I don't have an exercise bike, but do have a bike and trainer setup. I have 5 Spinervals and they range in length from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. These are tough, tough!!! They make Cathe's workouts seem easy. Most of the ones I have are interval workouts and I think using a HRM along with these is pretty helpful. I think increasing the resistance would be like weight workout for legs, but would be limited in which muscles you use. On 3 of mine, Coach Troy has you get off the bike and pump out a bunch of squats and then hold the squat isometrically for a set time. Did I say these were tough? The one I will do tomorrow for the first time will keep you in your aerobic zone for nearly an hour, burning many fat calories. You definitely need a fan, plenty of fluids and a towel while you work out. My cycling friends (advanced riders and racers) swear by these workouts during the off season (winter time) to help maintain their fitness.

Before when I've ridden the trainer with only music, I found it incredibly boring and could only do about 20 minutes max. These DVD's at least have you thinking about suffering! Don't know about other workouts for bikes.

What's the name of the DVD's? Did you get them from collage?

Hi Christie,
No, I haven't seen them in the Collage catalog. You can go to www.spinervals.com and read the descriptions and see a brief clip. I have to warn you that to me they are not fun like Cathe's workouts, but they are effective. I'm using them because I want to improve my road cycling. The ones I have are "Lean & Mean", "Enter The Red Zone" (by the way, both of these have Brenda from Cathe's crew in them), "Aero Base I", "Mental Toughness", and "Recovery and Technique". The first two are from the Fitness series and the last 2 are from the Competition Series. Fitness seems to be more for advanced exercisers, while Competition is targeting "serious" athletes (triathletes, bike racers, etc.), though I think they will be helpful for anyone looking to work hard. They will definitely get your heart rate up there!!!!

I previewed Aero Base I today and you should see the sweat dripping off of these riders!

Thanks I'm going to take a look now.

Hi Christi,

I am also a fan of the Spinervals workouts. ETRZ & Lean and Mean are my faves. I would also suggest Robert Sherman's Cycle Challenge. I think it's a good intro to spinning. He explains everything in detail as well as proper form. It has a great core workout at the end too. You can preview it Collage, but I would purchase it at Deep Discount DVD. It's much cheaper there.
