Any anyone do the splits?

August

Cathlete
Hi there,

Upon seeing someone do it in the stretch part of my workout today, on a whim I tried doing the splits.

To my utter amazement, I was almost able to do them.

Now I am obsessed to be able to go down allllll the way. :)

Anyone here teach themselves how to do this, and if they did, did they totally throw their hips out on the journey? LOL. If I hold myself in the splits (one leg in front and one in the back) for a little while on each side, trying to go a little lower every day or so, do you think that will do it?

August....are you bored???? LOL. Yes I can do the splits, but I've always been pretty flexible. AND NO this didn't come from Yoga in any form or fashion. :p :p :p . Keep trying girl and you'll be doin um in no time!!!!

Did you ever catch that Sweet Potatoe man yet? There's an even more important endeavor!!!

Briee

No, I have NOT caught the stupid Sweet Potato Man Truck yet. x(

You can do them? I'm so jealous!!! I've also been fairly flexible, but I never thought I might be able to do the splits. I MUST be able to do the splits. I MUST! LOL.

Next year's project is a headstand. :)

Hey...I feel the need to share that Sooooooooooooosan can do the splits. Unfortunately, she's gonna claim it's from all the yoga}( }( }( }( }( }( . She can do crane too, and bird of paradise, and do 896 pullups etc....... she can probably even catch the sweet potatoe man.:7 :7 :7 :7

Briee again

I can do a split but the "scissor" one not the "v" one. So, yes you can do one too. I tried going down lower each day and finally one day I did the full split. I could probably do the "v" one too if I wanted to but I need to master my Cathe dvd's first and worry about that later. :) Belieeeeve me, if I can do it, anybody can do it. Just don't push yourself too hard too soon because you might hurt yourself. And once you can do a full split and haven't done one in a month or so, don't try to show off to your friends that you can do one or you'll need help off the floor like I did.

HTH :)

Kathy

I can split with either leg leading, and do the v splits. But I have always been flexible and love to stretch because it is easy. And I am 45. Good for you for working on your flexibility.

>And once you can do a full split and haven't done one in a month or so, don't try to show off to your friends that you can do one or you'll need help off the floor like I did.

Sooooooooooooosan....didn't this happen to you in some kind of a dance session???? :7 :7 :7 :7 :p

Briee

I can do splits, either leg leading and straight down v-split. Been able to do them since cheerleading days loooooooooooong ago.

Just keep at at gently every day.

I can do all the splits. I used to do ballet for many years and I've always been flexible but I did lose a little flexibility during the years I didn't work out. But it does come back. Make sure you are fully warmed up before doing them. I love the stretch in Butts & Guts where you lift your leg up to the ceiling (yes, I can still do that too!). It's also a great stretch for the hamstrings.

Don't bounce when trying to do the splits, just ease into them slowly. It will come.

Marcy

Briee - You and Soooosan can both do the splits? Well, I'm going to be able to do them too, by the end of this year, dangit! I'm going to be able to slide down and put both hands in the air like ta-da! What the heck is a crane?

Kathy - Were you able to do the full split with your hands off the ground? Is it possible to get that comfortable with it? I'll be sure to impress my friends as soon as the moment comes to fruition. LOL.

Dorothyrd - I'm so jealous of you. I have no other comment. ;)

Shelley - I'm not even going to attempt to be able to do the V split. Not until I've got the regular one down at least.

Melody - What's going on?! How come so many of you guys can do the splits?! I thought this was some special thing! Gently every day, got it. You think I should just do both sides for a few minutes every day?

Marcy - You actually said something that is so no-duh yet something I would have totally ignored - the being warmed up part. Tonight at work I decided I should show my work associates how close to a split I am and just went straight for the gusto without doing any kind of stretching. Heh. You gave good, simple advice. My groin thanks you. No bouncing. Got it. Thanks!

I can't wait to be able to do them! :7 Thanks for all the advice! :)

Yes, I can do a split leading left or right without hands toughing the floor. It takes time tho. You need to stretch those muscles each day until you touch the floor. If it hurts too much STOP. Try again next day and you will notice that you will be able to go lower.

" They say hard work does not hurt anybody, but why take the chance."

August....maybe you should start a "splits" checkin? We can all discuss our various ta-da positions on a regular basis. JUST KIDDING.

What do you mean you don't know what crane is?????? You now own 2 million yoga DVD's (correct me if I'm wrong) and YOU HAVE NOT YET ENCOUNTERED CRANE?????? Are you just owning these DVD's or are you DOING them???? ROTFLOL!!!

I would explain to you what crane is, but I JUST CAN'T. It's a matter of principle (principal? sp?). I DO NOT DISCUSS YOGA.

Briee (wish I COULD though, as crane is quite a fun position to be in - if you don't count the crashing down on your head while falling over on the mat part)

Haha, I can see how one could come to a point where NOT going down all the way would hurt. I guess a good time to tag on my splits stretch is at the end of my yoga practice.

Or maybe after my Crane practice. :)

I've only got 500,000 of the yoga DVDs I've ordered (they're still traveling across the sea I guess x( ) but I can't say I've heard the instructor say "this is Crane." Crashing down on your head? It sounds like it's the position where you have your legs up straight in a shoulder stand after Plow.

Plow is such the appropriate name for that position.

Okay August....since you are pressing me so....crane is where you crouch down on your feet, place your hands on the floor in front of you and place your knees on your elbows (almost triangular in position) and balance on your hands only. You may touch a toe ever so slightly, but then you must lift your toe off the floor, knees placed upon your elbow/tricep area, once you get your balance. Of course, one will then topple forward crashing down on to your head, pounding it into the ground and altering your neck forever, which is why you must do more yoga to fix the neck problem that you encounter from doing crane. It's a twisted circle to be drawn into...this yoga thing. JUST SAY NO! That's what I always say :p :p :p }( }( }(

Briee (;) ;) ;) ;) no offense to all you yogini's!! This is all in fun!)

Oh! Oh! Oh! I totally know what you're talking about! I want to do the Crane! I want to do the Crane!

But I hurt myself with The Wheel the other day, so I have to get all the way better from that first. :p

There are a bunch of restaurants in Tokyo that serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, so that's what I did! Of course, it's nothing like a home-cooked meal,...so it was delicious! :D

>Of course, it's nothing like a home-cooked meal,...so it was delicious! ROTFLOL!!!!! You are too funny!
