Hi guys, I'm freaking out...have an ant problem...yuk!!! Anyone have experience with this and have any suggestions...at what point do I call an exterminator? We noticed them a few days ago, put down some traps and we think we know where they are coming from, sprayed vinegar there (read that somewhere). What do you think?

Boy we have ants too. I have a self storage business with keypads for the gate entry. We came back one night and keyed in our code and ants came flying out behind the keypad. We had to unscrew the keypad and spray behind it and down the metal pole it was attached too.

I use Bengal Roach spray and it has no odor to it and it leaves a residue to keep killing.
You can use borac powder also for a non-chemical treatment.

You need to try to find where they are coming in at and treat that area.

We had a really bad problem with ants in our house when we moved in two years ago. We had a bug company come in every 3 months for a year or so. They advised pruning trees and bushes near your house as the ants use them as a bridge and ladder to get inside. Ants also love water (I didn't know that). We had to quit the service in order to cut some spending and started using Terro pre-filled traps (I find them at Walmart) whenever I spy an ant. Guess what?! I think they work just as good as the service  For a savings of about $75!!!!

Best of luck!

Mint works great for ants. Few drops of mint essentail oil will do the trick. I don't know how this would work outside, but when I have vistors in m kitchen during warm months, the mint works well and it's not toxic.

Every year! We use the Terro traps, but I also find that spraying the perimeters in the spring every few weeks, especially after a lot of rain helps as a preventative measure. They are annoying, but don't hurt anything.

I second that advice

I had an exterminator come out twice. We had a contact with them and they were suppose to come out for free any time we had a problem. He didn't get rid of the ants so I terminated our contract. Used the terro, two rounds, but they are gone, and have been for a few years!

I had fire ants when we lived in AZ! Terrible! I was attacked by them when cleaning and I basically ran screaming down the hallway, ripping off my clothes and jumped into the shower. Finally, I put on one of my husband's mechanic jumpsuits and gloves and shop-vacuumed the house, sucking up those little creeps. I'm sure that DH would have done this, but he was deployed at the time. I put traps everywhere--including the body of the shop-vac. I also sprayed the perimeter of the house. I try to go with non-toxic solutions to this stuff, but my earth-friendliness left at the arrival of those little devils. Also, pests in AZ can be deadly. Sometimes, they just arrive, regardless of cleanliness. I was keeping the house spotless because we were selling, so I was sweeping, vacuuming and dusting daily.

Ant traps or bait stations work great. You just have to be patient. It takes about a week to 10 days to work. The ants go in the trap and take the bait back to the queen and the colony of ants dies. I always put twice the amount of traps out and it works like a charm. Don't use vinegar at the same time as they will establish another path and mode of entry.
Hope that helps.
