Another New Video Question

Amy Steppe

Cathlete
I would like to ask that the new videos have a more gradual warm-up than "Step Works" which just doesn't let up from the get-go. Some days I want to warm up to higher levels more gradually. One of my favorite warm-ups from the past is the one in "Power Max" -- that one begins slowly and builds up to a killer middle and end.

Anyone else for a more gradual warm-up?

Thanks!

Something for everyone!

Hi Amy --

This cracks me up, because I did Step Works this morning and LOVE the pace of the warm-up. You are one fit woman and I completely respect your issues with it, but it's funny how differently we all respond to different warm-ups. Of course, when they build more slowly, they are longer, which might cut into the body of the workout. I think the Step Fit warm-up -- which is pretty long -- is my favorite. Do you like that one?

Step Fit's Warmup

As a matter of fact, I love "Step Fit's" warmup. I agree when Cathe says, "Oh, what a thorough warmup." I did "Step Works" last night and as usual, it kicked my butt. That last section just sends me over the edge -- Some days I prefer the quick warmup of "Step Works" but on others I prefer a slower warmup just to get me motivated --like on my "slug" days.

I feel...

like when a warm up is long that it does cut into my workout. I know it's important but I'm ready for the HARD stuff!! I think a lot of the times I am just in a hurry (what's new?) & I just want to get to the GOOD part! But I take my time and do the Warm-up.

Warm Ups

As my body ages, I find that I need longer warmups. This is a biological fact. Also, warming up thoroughly prevents injuries. One mistake I constantly observe when I workout at a track is that most people begin full-blast with no warm-up and no cooldown. I do both and feel that they are beneficial to my overall fitness.

Short vs long warmup

Iam in that over 40 age group and I have experimented a little with warm-ups. I have found no differences with a short warmup versus a long warmup for myself. Sometimes when I jog I only warmup for about 2-3 minutes and I have found that sufficient. However, I have to do a thorough cooldown with long stretches. For my body longer cooldown is more important than a long warmup so if something has to be cut short its the warmup. I also don't like to do deep stretches in the warmup. I think that doing a deep stretch before the muscles are really warm can be somewhat bad. I like to do the standing stretches where I don't stretch the muscle too much.

Just my bodys personal preferences.

My warmup preferences

I used to think that I needed a longer warmup, but along came Interval Max with its "mini step workout" warmup, & I figured out that I need to do some of the aerobic activity I am going to do as a workout & not just a little warmup with stretches at the end. If I am going to be doing step, then I need a little stepping to warmup with--same goes for hi/lo or kickboxing. I also do real well at combo workouts when the hi/lo is before the step, but when the step is before the hi/lo my legs have been "shortened" up by the stepping that it's no good for me to do hi/lo. Interval Max, Step Works, & Step Fit are all good warmups for me, & MIC is great with the hi/lo at the beginning--I am so warmed up by the time the step comes around, I can kick my butt big time, & cheat ;o) during the step intervals without feeing deprived of intensity. I plan on combining the new express workouts, so I guess any kind of warmup will work for me.
