Another Low Carb Question

Hello again!! I was just wondering, for those of you who do low carb, do you do something in the lines of Atkins (low carb, high fat) or do you do a version where you are doing low carbs, lower fat? I have been following the Atkins version (though I do eat more carbs in a day)but wondering if switching to a lower fat leaner meat type of low carbing might be more beneficial?!?! I would love to hear what you think.

Thanks,

Kim

I'll be able to answer this (whether it's beneficial) better in a couple of days. I just had blood drawn today and will get the results in a few days. I had my blood work done just before I started low carbing last year and am anxious to see how it has changed. I do not necessarily limit my fats, but do get a mixture of lower fat and higher fat choices. For instance, I buy lean hamburger because I like it, but buy chicken thighs because I like the dark meat better than the breast and wings are too fatty for me.

For the record I am doing my own thing with low carbing, but the Atkins diet book will specifically tell you that low carb/low fat will NOT work. In order for low carb to work you need the fat. Otherwise you should try South Beach which emphasizes good carbs over bad carbs and low fat. The Atkins diet relies on the fat for your body to burn after you burn off you reserve of carbs in your body. Plus the fat you eat helps to stave off hunger pains.

My dh is still doing Atkins and I read the book and did the Induction phase with him. I personally lost weight too fast on Atkins and have since added back in more carbs in the way of fruit and some whole wheat crackers. I lost 16.5 pounds in 17 days and was dizzy and light headed and had no energy for my workouts and no strength so I personally couldn't handle the strictness of Atkins.

Hope that helps you some!!:)

I've been eating low carb/lower fat and it works well for me. I don't eat red meat like beef or pork, no eggs or dairy. Some chicken breast without skin, white turkey, or fish each day. Most of the fat I get is from olive oil, which I use for cooking and homemade salad dressing and (shelled) nuts which I eat every day.

After reducing the fat from my LC diet, I lost even more weight (and now 5# under goal weight).

Thanks for the replies. I guess I was really curious if you use, for example, lower fat/fat free versions of products versus the real thing (lowfat/fat free cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, salad dressings, mayo, etc.).

Thanks again!!

Kim

On those types of things I use the full fat versions...the only thing I've ever tried in the low fat variety that tasted anything like the full fat version was sour cream...there is ONE brand of fat free that I love...other than that, I go full fat.

Thanks, Donna. I was wondering about that because I did notice that the lower fat versions of these items have more carbs.
