Another Halloween topic: Scariest BOOK!

I love Intensitylisa's post re: scary movies, and that made me think about scary books, which I have loved ever since I was a pre-teen reading my grandmother's "Reader's Digest Condensed Books" until the middle of the night and scaring myself half to death! :)

My all-time favorite goose-bumper is Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House," written way back in the 1950's (and which I first read, by the way, at my grandmother's in -- you guessed it -- a RDCB version.) Trivia note: The first paragraph of this book is widely considered to be the finest "opener" in the entire horror genre. This is a short little book and in some ways it's gotten a little bit dated, but it still contains some of the most startling "gotcha" scenes in print.

Another really great one is Peter Straub's "Ghost Story." In fact, I'd say these two are the most hair-raising books I've ever read. And both were made into crummy movies, although "Ghost Story" was the better of the two. Trivia note: "Ghost Story" was Fred Astaire's last movie. Betcha didn't know that. (What my strange little mind retains is really beyond understanding. :))

Here's another great book that was made into a so-so movie: Thomas Diehl's "Primal Fear." I usually figure out a plot well before the end of a book, but the last two pages of this book had my jaw dropping. While it's not really a horror book, it's terrific suspense and a psychological thriller.

I've read just about everything Stephen King has ever written and find the quality varies a lot; his earliest stuff remains the best and scariest, IMHO.

What do you spooky book aficionados like to read??

Carrie by Stephen King, Rosemary's Baby & The Stepford Wives both by Ira Levin (Stepford Wives is kind of funny, but I sometimes have a 'persecution complex' so to me, this one was frightening), the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, Boys From Brazil by Ira Levin, and the memoir Lucky by Alice Sebold because it is scary that things like that happen and that most of the time, the bad guys get away with it.

Certainly Stephen King's "Pet Sematary". I was 17 when I first read it. I was halfway through the book and wanted so much to finish it, but it was very late already and I had school the next day. So I knocked on my parents' bedroom door and asked if I could sleep on their floor that night. It was a very unusual request, so I explained that I was reading this scary book and wasn't comfortable sleeping by myself until I knew how it ended. Pissed my father off to high heavens!}(

I can't recall the name of this book but was sooooooooooo scary I actually had to throw it away!! gave me the chills like I have never felt before, but the scariest books I read are from Dean Koontz and Mary Higgins Clark I am a HUGE Mary Higgins Clark fan!!

Hi Kathy! I'd have to say "The Witching Hour" by Anne Rice; I just LOVE her writing. This one was sooo scary even reading it on a crowded subway train! Kathy:D

False Memory by Dean Koontz. I still get shivers down my spine just thinking about that book. I actually started reading it and had to stop for a few months and build up courage to finish it!

Another Stephan King fan here.

Bobbi - Have you read the uncut version of "The Stand"? I really liked how the characters were more rounded out.

I can still remember the last line of "The Pet Cemetary" and I read that about 7 or 8 years ago.

"Ghost Story" scared the crap out of me. I should read it again.

``The Exorcist'' and ``The Shining.'' If I ever think about those 2 books at night, I immediately force myself to think of something else!

Oh, and the Amityville Horror, too. I woke up at 3 A.M. every night for weeks (probably because I was sleeping with the overhead light on)!
