Hey girls, you'd think I'd know what I can and can't eat by now (since it's my third pregnancy), but I need help with something. I forgot to ask my doc last week at my appointment -- I keep reading that it's OK to eat honey while pregnant. Do you agree? Also, is it OK to eat flax seeds? I have a recipe for no-bake energy bars that has both in it, and I really want to make them, but I didn't know about those two ingredients...

PS Here's the recipe if you're interested (from Sara Snow--Discovery Health)

2 1/2 cups old fashioned organic quick oats (or regular oats)
1/2 cup whole flax seed
1/4 cup organic dark cocoa powder
1/2 cup natural peanut butter
1/2 cup honey
1/2 t spirulina (WHICH I AM NOT ADDING BECAUSE I DON"T THINK I SHOULD EAT IT-- Plus it looks really nasty--it's a blue-green algae)
1/2 to 1 cup hot water (to bind the mixture together)

Stir the ingredients. Form into individual paddles -- about the size of hamburgers. Wrap in plastic wrap and keep in the freezer or fridge.

Stephanie, I think it looks good! In fact I'm gonna plan to make some soon. (Don't think I'll add the algae either! Yikes!) Thanks for posting the recipe - looks greaT!

thanks for the recipe - looks great. do you think one could use flax meal instead of whole seeds? just a thought? and what is the purpose of the algae? what could we add instead? nothing against algae, but....

Stephanie--Only the new moms know all that stuff(what you can eat, what kind of medication you can take etc.) because they read all the baby books. I'm on baby #7 and when I have a question I ask a new mom because I've plumb forgot all that stuff and have no desire to read the baby books at this stage:7 :+ :p.

Anyway, I think that flax seeds and honey are fine. And I don't know about the algae--I wouldn't even know where to get it. The bars sound really good--thanks for sharing.

How far along are you?

Maggie:)

Hey Maggie,
I agree. I quit reading those books after my first little boy because they made me ultra-paranoid, and I'm already a worrywart by nature. I think I'm going to make these. The algae is apparently to add antioxidants. It looked like a powder, so I doubt it has any flavor, but I definitely wouldn't eat it while pregnant or nursing unless asking a doc first.

I'll be 16 weeks on Tuesday. I think it's so amazing that you are having your seventh baby! I wish I had the patience to have four or five. Just think, when your kids are all grown, you'll be covered in grandkids, and holidays will always be amazingly special. How far along are you?

Yes, I hope to be covered in grand-children and great grand-children when I am an old woman, if I live that long. I will be 23 weeks tomorrow---so we aren't too far apart:)

I hope you have an easy and uneventful pregnancy:)

Maggie:)

I think from what I have read that Pasteurized honey is okay. So the white solid honey is okay, not the liquid honey which is not pasteurized. The bars sound delicious. I bet you could substitute greens in it instead of the algae. Just for an extra nutritional boost! I've heard some people say that greens also has helped them with morning sickness. Worth a shot! As far as the flax seeds go I sure hope they are okay because I have been eating them ground up in my smoothies every morning for my entire pregnancy. They are full of omega 3's so I think they would be especially good for the baby's brain development too!
Hope this is helpful!
Michelle
