And on the seventh day.....

Ok, I have developed what my DH (he actually refers to himself as SDH, the S being for "super") considers is a real problem. I have a tendency to not take a day off from working out unless I just cannot even function. I know that the recommendation is to have at least one day off every week, but I just feel like if I have the energy I should be using it! Are there any members of the educated crowd who have my same "problem"? I promised SDH that I would post and find out what my fellow Cathe-ites have to say about it instead of continuing to blow off his advice. Thanks ladies!

I used to never take a day off. My DH (SDH- too cute!) suggested STRONGLY that I take a day off. He said, "your joints will be rested, your muscles recovered, and you'll be able to do any type of workout the next day; cardio, strength, or circuit, because you'll have had a day to rest all your body parts." You know what (and I hate this but...) he was right. Now I take every Friday off. I have so much energy on Saturdays that I usually end up doing 2 days worth of workouts anyway, but it really is nice to have that one day to rest my ankles, shoulders, etc. Just my opinion though.

YES I am also guilty.I haven't taken a day off in months.I will when I need one but right now the results I am seeing are worth it.I will listen to my body and take one when needed so you are not alone.I always have to be doing something I have nervous energy.

Something I do on a day when I should rest but don't want to is to do one puny little body part like S/H just the triceps or just the shoulders. Or just the chest from CTX. It gets the blood moving and I feel alert, that body part gets an extra workout and almost everything else, most significantly my legs, gets the day off. Is this a good compromise for you Kamikazes?;)

Agreeing with Jilly! I never used to take a day off. Once I found this place and heard the importance of a day off to recoup, heal and just plain REST, I decided to give it a try. That was about three years ago and you know what, I actually look forward to that day. I don't even feel guilty anymore for doing "nothing"! It just plain feels good and like Jilly, I am ready for Monday with tons of energy! Try it, you just might like it!

Remember that DVD or Video will still be there the next day, and you will probably have even more energy to do it, therefore getting a better workout. Your body needs time to recover at some point and if you don't give it a chance to do that, you may end up backpedaling and losing some fitness that you've worked so hard to achieve. It's GOOD FOR YOU to take a day off! Heh... I guess I have the opposite problem - I look forward to my weekly rest day a litte too much sometimes. ;-)

What about using your 7th day for something mild like stretching, or yoga? I usually can't fit in stretching unless I do it on the 7th day/rest day, and then I can get a good stretch for my muscles.

*For those that know stretching cold muscles isn't recommended, I've found a great way to warm up your muscles before a stretch video is one of Cathe's warm ups (just pick any one!) or the 8min TaeBo video, it'll get your blood flowing and warm you up well enough for a nice stretch.

I used to never take a day off also. Then I started feeling overuse in my muscles and joints so I switched to one day off. That was okay. Now I'm on a 3 days on 1 day off routine and I love it. My body is more rested. I have more energy for the workouts and I'm seeing more physical results. :) I would really encourage you to take at least one day off. On this day if you really feel like it try some deep stretching(maybe yoga) or go for a walk. I usually do about 45 minutes of stretching and practice my core moves(planks!) I'd hate to see you injure yourself from not giving your body the rest it needs and then be out of comission longer than you imagine! ;-) Take care, take a break-stay strong, Susan

I use to never take a day off. (I didnt last week bad - and my hamstring is a tad sore so I get the message).

Try it and see how you feel - especially with the lifting - a guy friend who was heavy into lifting taught me the importance of giving the muscles time to heal and he sure looked great - So I gotta believe it's true.

I think it's easier to go without a day off for cardio but lifting definetly it helps for your overall development.

I know it's true with most things we dont like to slow down - harder to get going but rest really is beneficial.
